Dan,
This is probably not what a biomedical engineer is looking for, but perhaps
the following information will be useful. Please feel free to tell your
dual degree colleagues about our April 12-14, 1996 meeting and to contact
me (Roberta Siegel) if you have any questions.

The Program in Medicine, Arts, and the Social Sciences at the University of
Chicago will be hosting, with the co-sponsorship of the University of
Illinois Medical Scholars Program and Harvard Medical School (Dr. Leon
Eisenberg)
"A NATIONAL MEETING ON MD/PhD EDUCATION AND RESEARCH IN THE HUMANITIES AND
THE SOCIAL SCIENCES", April 12-14, 1996. Like the "National Meeting of
Social Science MD/PhD Students and Graduates" organized by Dr. Eisenberg
and colleagues at Harvard in April 1994, we hope to bring together MD/PhD
and MD/JD students, recent graduates, and junior and senior faculty who, in
addition to medicine, share a commitment to another field of scholarship IN
THE SOCIAL SCIENCES, HUMANITIES, PUBLIC POLICY, THEOLOGY, ETHICS, or LAW.

The April 1996 meeting will provide opportunities for participants to
present scholarly papers which exhibit their unique perspective to a
broader audience and focus on a topic or theme which is explicated,
discussed and debated from different points of view. It will encourage the
exchange of ideas and knowledge concerning MD/PhD scholarship in the
humanities, the social sciences, public policy, law, theology and medical
ethics. There will be time for discussion of participants' professional
development and the unique responsibilities each has as clinician, teacher,
and researcher. Finally, we hope to exemplify, by the quality of the
scholarship, the worthiness of educating physicians in disciplines beyond
the physical or biological sciences.

Several sessions will be devoted to research presentations, and we invite
the submission of abstracts (one page, double-spaced, approximately 250
words) by October 1,1995. Authors of the selected abstracts will be
invited to present 20 minute papers at the meeting. Of particular interest
are those subjects that interface with medicine and provide scholarly
insights which contribute to the formulation of public policies and to
potential solutions for the complex problems facing the medical profession
and health care in our society today. Educational concepts and policies
furthering the efficacy of dual degree programs would also contribute to
the goals of the meeting.

If you would like to participate, or if you have any questions, please
