To all net-recipients.
Mr. Goldstein's story is very sad. I cannot believe that the administration
will force repayment of the MD/PhD funds. Contractually speaking,
I am certain that if there is no funding for further research, that
the student in question cannot be forced to continue in the program.
Why doesn't he switch to another advisor?
Funding situations across the country, and especially in
academic medicine are continuing to worsen. There are just more
PhD graduates interested in biomed research than can be accomodated
by the universities. I heard an estimate recently that 10-20
medical schools will be closed within the next 10 years. Many schools
I know are operating in the red. Clinical work re-imbursement
continues to fall, and except for a few forward looking establishments,
most schools have not invested the time and resources and thought
into establishing primary care networks which can feed into their
tertiary care programs.
I have no constructive suggestions, I am afraid regarding
this issue. But if funding for research became unavailable fo
for this person, I am positive a good lawyer could get his
repayment obligations waived.
Good luck.
