Vol. 5 No. 17-SP-HAJJ Zul-Hajjah 10, 1414 Hijri Saturday May 21, 1994
-- This is a special IINN publication on Hajj. --
HAJJ: (Pilgrimage) The pilgrimage season begins in the tenth
month, the month following Ramadan, and lasts through the middle
of twelveth month, Dhu al-Hijja. This fifth pillar requires all
Muslims who are physically and financially capable to make Hajj
to Mecca once during their lives. The actual rites and prayers
take place at the scred Ka'ba in Mecca and at nearby locations.
Muslims associate the origin of the Hajj and the founding of the
Ka'ba with the prophet Abraham.
The hajj is a worldwide gathering of over two million Muslims to
the holy city, and a remarkable spiritual happening. In
performing hajj, a pilgrim follows the order of a ritual as
Muhammad performed the rites during his last pilgrimage.

Obligations During Ihram.
During Ihram, the pilgrim should faithfully observe all that Allah has
made obligatory on him such as the daily prayers at their proper times.
Furthermore, he should avoid what Allah has prohibited such as wrong
doing, quarreling, committing sins and he should guard against harming
other Muslims by deed or by word. During the state of Ihram for Hajj or
'Umrah, pilgrims should abstain from what is prohibited during Ihram,
namely:
a) They should not cut their hair or shave any part of their body
without a lawful excuse. There is no harm if hair falls off by itself.
b) They should not clip their nails.
c) They should not use perfumes or colognes, whether on the clothes or
on the body. There is no harm if the scent applied before putting on the
Ihram garments remains.
d) They should not kill, frighten or assist in hunting any land game as
long as they are in Ihram.
e) Within the precincts of Al-Haram, nobody is allowed to cut trees,
pluck vegetables or collect lost property except for the sake of
identifying it for its owner. This applies to everybody and at all times
(irrespective of whether the Muslim is a the state of Ihram or not).
f) Men should not propose to women or contract marriage either for
themselves or on behalf of others. Sexual intercourse with one's spouse
is prohibited too and would actually invalidate Hajj. All these actions
are prohibited during the period of Ihram. All the above prohibitions
apply equally to men and women alike.
g) A man may not cover his head. However, the shade of an umbrella or
the roof of a car is permissible. There is no harm in carrying a bag or
a box on one's head.
h) A man may not wear a shirt or anything else which is sewn, such as
Burnoose, Turban, trousers, Khuff (short, thin boot), on the whole or
part of his body. However, if an Izar (one of the two garments of Ihram,
worn in the lower part of the body) is not available, trousers may be
worn, and if sandals are not available a khuff may be worn. Jabir
reported Allah's Messenger, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, as saying:
"He who does not find sandals to wear may wear khuff, and he who does
not find a lower garment to wear may put on trousers." Muslim.
i) It is forbidden for a woman to wear gloves on her hands or to cover
her face with a face-veil (niqab) during the state of Ihram. However, if
male strangers are around her, she should conceal her face with her head
covering or something similar. These rules apply until she comes out of
Ihram. It is permissible though to wear sandals, rings, eyeglasses,
hearing aids, wrist watches or a belt that protects one's money or
documents. It is also permissible to change one's clothes and to wash
them, as well as to wash one's hair and body, and it does not matter if
some hair inadvertently falls off during washing.
A pilgrim committing any of the violations a) through i) is required to
atone for the violation by fasting three days or feeding six poor people
or offering a sacrifice. The only exception is sexual intercourse with
one's spouse; such a violation cannot be atoned for as it invalidates
the Hajj.
2. Who Should Make Hajj. ................................. from Juhar Mohammad

Who Should Make Hajj.
Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam. Allah said (S3 A97): "Hajj to the
House of Allah is a duty of mankind towards Allah for those who are able
to make their way there." The Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam,
said: "Islam is built on five pillars: bearing witness that none is
worthy of worship except Allah and that Mohammed is the Messenger of
Allah, performing prayers, paying Zakat, performing Hajj and fasting
Ramadhan." Bukhari and Muslim.
Hajj is mandatory on people once in their lifetime if the following four
conditions are fulfilled:
1- Islam: Hajj is for Muslims only.
2- Sanity: Hajj is not obligatory for the insane because of the
inability to understand what is done.
3- Adulthood: Non-adults are not required to make Hajj.
4- Ability: This includes the following:
a) To have the health and physical ability to bear the difficulties of
travel. Aged persons and people suffering from serious ailment with no
hope for recovery may appoint others to perform the Hajj on their behalf
if they are unable to endure the burdens of the journey.
b) To feel confident about the safety of the road, that it is free from
any dangers that threaten the security of the pilgrim, his life or
wealth.
c) The possession of enough money to make the full trip and to support
those among his dependents who are staying behind.
Any Muslim who has not performed Hajj should try his best to do it. Some
Muslims have the ability to perform Hajj but they postpone it for no
reason other than being busy or claiming that Hajj is only for elderly
people. The Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, said in his Khutbah:
"O people, Allah has prescribed Hajj upon you, so perform Hajj." Muslim.
The reward for Hajj is tremendous. The Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa
salam, said: "He who performs Hajj with no obscenity or evil practices
will come out as a newly born baby, free from all sins." Bukhari and
Muslim. Hajj is one of the best deeds that is prescribed upon Muslims.
Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam,
was asked: "What is the best deed?" He said: "To believe in Allah and
His Messenger." He was then asked: "What is the next best thing?" He
said: "To make Jihad for the sake of Allah." He was then asked: "What is
the next best thing?" He said: "Hajj Mabrur (a faultless Hajj that is
free of sin and is graced with Divine acceptance and pleasure.)"
Bukhari. May Allah help all Muslims perform Hajj in the way that pleases
Him. Then Allah will reward them with Paradise as the Prophet, salla
Allah- u alaihe wa salam, said: "The reward of Hajj Mabrur is nothing
but Paradise." Bukhari.
3. Pillars of Hajj. ...................................... from Juhar Mohammad
from

Pillars of Hajj.
Pillars of Hajj
Hajj has four essential pillars. If any of these pillars is not
performed, the Hajj is nullified. These pillars are:
1- Ihram:
Ihram is to make the intention to perform Hajj. This intention is
accompanied by wearing the Ihram garments and saying the Talbeyah (The
wording of the Talbeyah will be detailed in the following article).
2- Tawaf Al-Ifadha:
Tawaf is to circle the Ka'bah seven times. Tawaf Al-Ifadha is the
circling that is performed after attendance in Arafat and Muzdalifah.
There are six conditions for conducting Tawaf:
a) To make the intention to conduct Tawaf.
b) To purify the body in the same way as it is purified for prayer.
Prophet Mohammed, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, said: "The Tawaf around
the House of Allah is subject to the same conditions as prayer except
that you can speak during it. So whoever wants to talk during the Tawaf
should speak only good." Tirmithi.
c) To cover the 'Awrah. The 'Awrah is the part of the body which extends
from the navel to the knee for a man, and is the whole body for a woman
except the face and the hands.
d) To perform Tawaf inside Al-Masjid Al-Haraam.
e) To perform the Tawaf in such a way that the Ka'bah lies always on
one's left side.
f) To circle the Ka'bah seven times starting from the black stone and
ending with it.
3) Sa'i of Hajj:
Sa'i is to walk between the Safa and the Marwah (two hills in Al- Masjid
Al-Haraam) with the intention of worshipping Allah. Allah says (S2 A158)
"Verily! The Safa and the Marwah are some of the symbols of Allah. So it
is not a sin for those who perform Hajj or 'Umrah of the House ( the
Ka'bah at Makkah) to perform the Sa'i between them."
Sa'i of Hajj is the one that is performed after Tawaf Al-Ifadha. The
following conditions apply to Sa'i:
a) To make the intention of Sa'i.
b) Sa'i to be completed after Tawaf.
c) To complete the Sa'i seven rounds (one round is one-way from Safa to
Marwah or vice-versa).
d) To perform these rounds continuously. Brief stops are allowed
especially if there is a need for it.
4) The attendance in Arafat:
Attendance in Arafat starts on the morning of the ninth day of the month
of Thul-Hijjah and ends on the dawn of the tenth day. Attending in
Arafat even a short part of the night prior to the dawn of the tenth day
of Thul-Hijjah is sufficient to fulfill this pillar.
4. The Hajj Journey ...................................... from Juhar Mohammad
from
Juhar Mohammad
The Hajj Journey
"And proclaim to mankind the Hajj. They will come to you on foot and on
every lean camel, they will come from every deep and distant mountain
highways to perform Hajj." (S22 A27)
Allah prescribed Hajj upon Muslims once in a lifetime. Abu Hurairah
reported that the Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, said: 'O
people, Allah prescribed Hajj upon you, so you have to perform it.' A
man asked the Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, whether the act
should be carried out annually. The Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa
salam, kept silent and the man repeated his question three times. Then
the Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, replied: 'If I say yes it
will become obligatory and you will not be able to do it." Muslim.
Although Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime, it is prescribed only
upon those who have the means and are physically able to perform it.
Types of Hajj
Hajj may be performed in one of the following ways:
1- Hajj Al-Tamatt'u: In this type, one is to perform 'Umrah during the
Hajj months (i.e. Shawwal, Thul-Qe'dah and the first ten nights of
Thul-Hijjah) and to perform the Hajj in the same year with a sacrifice
slaughtered in Mina on the day of Eid Al-Adh'ha (The 10th day of
Thul-Hijjah) or during the days of Tashreeq (i.e. the 11th, 12th and
13th day of Thul-Hijjah). The pilgrim may remove his Ihram garments and
resume his normal life activities between 'Umrah and Hajj. It is
necessary to make the Tawaf and the Sa'i twice, the first time for
'Umrah and the second time for Hajj.
2- Hajj Al-Qiran: This is to combine 'Umrah and Hajj while observing
Ihram from the time of reaching the Miqat (place to perform Ihram) until
the day of sacrifice (i.e. Eid Al-Adh'ha). Hajj Al-Qiran is for those
who bring their sacrifice with them. At the Miqat, the pilgrim makes
intention there as follows: "Labbayka Allahumma 'Umrah Wa Hajj." A
pilgrim has to make Tawaf twice and Sa'i once. Sa'i should be made after
coming back from Mina, and a sacrifice should be slaughtered in Mina
during the days of Tashreeq.
3- Hajj Al-Ifrad: This is for people wishing to perform Hajj only. They
should be in the status of Ihram from the Miqat until the day of
sacrifice and should make their intention to perform Hajj by saying:
"Labbayka Allahumma Hajj"
In this article, we will explain the procedure for Hajj Al-Tamatt'u as
it is the most recommended one. Jabir reported that the Prophet, salla
Allah-u alaihe wa salam, stood among us and said: "You are well aware
that I am the most God-fearing, most truthful and most pious among you.
And if I had not brought my sacrificial animals with me, I would also
have removed my Ihram as you have removed it. And if I had known in
advance the outcome of my act, I would not have brought the sacrificial
animals with me." So the companions removed the Ihram and we also
removed it and listened to the Prophet and obeyed his command." Muslim.
SEQUENCE OF HAJJ JOURNEY
Ihram
Ihram is the intention of the person willing to perform all rites of
'Umrah, Hajj or both when he arrives at the Miqat. Each direction coming
into Makkah has its own Miqat. It is recommended that the one who
intends to perform Hajj makes Ghusl (taking a shower with the intention
to purify one's self), perfuming his body, but not his garments, and to
put on a two piece garment with no headgear. The garments should be of
seamless cloth. One piece to cover the upper part of the body, and the
second one to cover the lower part. For a woman the Ihram is the same
except that she should not use perfumes at all and her dress should
cover the whole body decently, leaving the hands and the face uncovered.
The pilgrim should say the intention according to the type of Hajj. For
Hajj Al-Tamatt'u one should say: "Labbayka Allahumma 'Umrah" which means
"O Allah I answered Your call to perform 'Umrah". It is recommended to
repeat the well known supplication of Hajj, called Talbeyah, as
frequently as possible from the time of Ihram till the time of the first
stoning of Jamrat Al-Aqabah in Mina. Men are recommended to utter the
Talbeyah aloud while women are to say it quietly. This Talbeyah is of
the form:
"Labbayka Allahumma Labbayk. Labbayka La Shareeka Laka Labbayk.
Inna-alhamda Wan-n'imata Laka Wal-mulk. La Shareek Lak." (Here I am at
your service. O my Lord, here I am. Here I am. No partner do You have.
Here I am. Truly, the praise and the provisions are Yours, and so is the
dominion. No partner do You have.)
Performing 'Umrah
Tawaf: When a Muslim arrives to Makkah, he should make Tawaf around the
Ka'bah, as a gesture of greeting Al-Masjid Al-Haraam. This is done by
circling the Ka'bah seven times in the counterclockwise direction,
starting from the black stone with Takbeer and ending each circle at the
black stone with Takbeer, keeping the Ka'bah to one's left. Then the
pilgrim goes to Maqam Ibrahim (Ibrahim's station), and performs two
Rak'ah behind it, close to it if possible, but away from the path of the
people making Tawaf. In all cases one should be facing the Ka'bah when
praying behind Maqam Ibrahim.
Sa'i: The next rite is to make Sa'i between Safa and Marwah. The pilgrim
starts Sa'i by ascending the Safa. While facing the Ka'bah he praises
Allah, raises his hands and says Takbeer "Allah-u Akbar" three times,
then makes supplication to Allah. Then the pilgrim descends from the
Safa and heads towards the Marwah. One should increase the pace between
the clearly marked green posts, but should walk at a normal pace before
and after them. When the pilgrim reaches the Marwah, he should ascend
it, praise Allah and do as he did at the Safa. This is considered one
round and so is the other way from the Marwah to the Safa. A total of
seven rounds are required to perform the Sa'i. After Sa'i, the Muslim
ends his 'Umrah rites by shaving his head or trimming his hair (women
should cut a finger tip's length from their hair). At this stage, the
prohibitions pertaining to the state of Ihram are lifted and one can
resume his normal life.
There are no required formulas or supplications for Tawaf or for Sa'i.
It is up to the worshipper to praise Allah or to supplicate Him with any
acceptable supplication or to recite portions of the Qur'an. Although it
is recommended to recite the supplications that the Prophet, salla
Allah-u alaihe wa salam, used to say during the performance of these
rites.
It must be noted that 'Umrah can be performed by itself as described
above at any time of the year.
Going out to Mina on the day of Tarwiah:
A pilgrim performing Hajj Al-Tamatt'u should intend Ihram, from the
place where he is staying, on the 8th day of Thul-Hijjah, which is the
Tarwiah Day, and leave to Mina in the morning. In Mina, the pilgrims
pray Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha of the 8th day of Thul- Hijjah and
Fajr of the 9th day of Thul-Hijjah. Dhuhr, Asr and Isha are each
shortened to two Rak'ah only, but are not combined. The pilgrim remains
in Mina until sunrise of the 9th day of Thul-Hijjah and then leaves to
Arafat.
Departure to Arafat:
On the 9th day of Thul-Hijjah, Day of Arafat, the pilgrims stay in
Arafat until sunset. The pilgrims pray Dhuhr and Asr at Arafat,
shortened and combined during the time of Dhuhr to save the rest of the
day for glorifying Allah and for supplication asking forgiveness. A
pilgrim should make sure that he is within the boundaries of Arafat, not
necessarily standing on the mountain of Arafat. The Prophet salla
Allah-u alaihe wa salam, said: "I stood here on the rocky hill and all
Arafat is a standing place" Muslim. One should keep reciting Talbeyah,
glorifying Allah the Greatest and repeating supplication. It is also
reported that the Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, used to say
the following supplication: "There is no deity worthy of worship except
Allah, the One without a partner.
The dominion and the praise are His and He is powerful over everything."
Anas Ibn Malik was asked once how he and his friends used to spend their
time while walking from Mina to Arafat in the company of the Prophet,
salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam. Anas said:
"Some of us used to cry out Talbeyah, others used to glorify Allah the
Greatest and the rest used to repeat prayers. Each one of us was free to
worship Allah in the way he likes without prejudice or renunciation of
his right." Bukhari.
In the vast square plain of Arafat, tears are shed, sins are washed and
faults are redressed for those who ask Allah for forgiveness and offer
sincere repentance for their wrong doings in the past. Happy is the
person who receives the Mercy and Pleasure of Allah on this particular
day.
The departure from Arafat:
Soon after sunset on the Day of Arafat, the pilgrims leave for
Muzdalifah quietly and reverently in compliance with the advice of the
Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, who said when he noticed people
walking without calmness: "O people! Be quiet, hastening is not a sign
of righteousness." Bukhari.
In order to follow the example of the Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa
salam, it is preferable to keep reciting the Talbeyah, glorifying Allah
the Greatest and mentioning the name of Allah until the time of stoning
Jamrat Al-Aqabah (a stone pillar in Mina). In Muzdalifah, the pilgrim
performs Maghrib and Isha prayers combined, shortening the Isha prayer
to two Rak'ah. Pilgrims stay overnight in Muzdalifah to perform the Fajr
prayer and wait until the brightness of the morning is widespread before
they leave to Mina passing through the sacred Mash'ar valley.
Women and weak individuals are allowed to proceed to Mina at any time
after midnight to avoid the crowd.
Stoning Jamrat Al-Aqabah:
When the pilgrims arrive at Mina, they go to Jamrat Al-Aqabah where they
stone it with seven pebbles glorifying Allah "Allah-u Akbar" at each
throw and calling on Him to accept their Hajj. The time of stoning
Jamrat Al-Aqabah is after sunrise. The Prophet, salla Allah- u alaihe wa
salam, threw the pebbles late in the morning and permitted weak people
to stone after leaving Muzdalifah after midnight. The size of the
pebbles should not be more than that of a bean as described by the
Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, who warned against exaggeration.
The pebbles can be picked up either in Muzdalifah or in Mina.
Slaughter of Sacrifice:
After stoning Jamrat Al-Aqabah, the pilgrim goes to slaughter his
sacrifice either personally or through the appointment of somebody else
to do it on his behalf. A pilgrim should slaughter either a sheep, or
share a cow or a camel with six others. Shaving the head or trimming the
hair The final rite on the tenth day after offering of sacrifice is to
shave one's head or to cut some of the hair. Shaving the head is,
however, preferable for it was reported that the Prophet prayed three
times for those who shaved their heads, when he said: "May Allah's Mercy
be upon those who shaved their heads." Bukhari and Muslim. For women,
the length of hair to be cut is that of a finger tip. The stoning of
Jamrat Al-Aqabah and the shaving of head or trimming of hair symbolizes
the end of the first phase of the state of Ihram and the lifting of its
restrictions except for sexual intercourse with one's spouse.
Stoning Jamrat Al-Aqabah, slaughtering the sacrifice and shaving the
head or cutting part of the hair are preferred to be in this order, as
it is the order that the Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, did
them. However, if they are done in any other order, there is no harm in
that.
Tawaf Al-Ifadhah:
Tawaf Al-Ifadhah is a fundamental rite of Hajj. The pilgrim makes Tawaf
Al-Ifadhah by visiting Al-Masjid Al-Haraam and circling the Ka'bah seven
times and praying two Rak'ah behind Maqam Ibrahim. Then the pilgrim
should make Sa'i between the Safa and the Marwah. After Tawaf Al-Ifadhah
the state of Ihram is completely ended and all restrictions are lifted
including sexual intercourse with one's spouse.
Tawaf Al-Ifadhah can be delayed until the days spent at Mina are over.
Return to Mina:
The pilgrim should return to Mina and spend there the days of Tashreeq
(i.e. the 11th, 12th and 13th day of Thul-Hijjah). During each day, and
after Dhuhr prayer, the pilgrim stones the three stone pillars called
"Jamarat": The small, the medium and Jamrat Al-Aqabah, glorifying Allah
"Allah-u Akbar" with each throw of the seven pebbles stoned at each
pillar. These pebbles are picked up in Mina. A Pilgrim may leave Mina to
Makkah on the 13th of Thul-Hijjah or on the 12th if he wishes, there is
no blame on him if he chooses the later, but he has to leave before
sunset.
Farewell Tawaf
Farewell Tawaf is the final rite of Hajj. It is to make another Tawaf
around the Ka'bah. Ibn Abbas said: "The people were ordered to perform
the Tawaf around the Ka'bah as the last thing before leaving Makkah,
except the menstruating women who were excused." Bukhari.

Rules for Sacrifices.
Udh'hiyah is an act of worship which consists of offering a Sacrifice on
the 10th day of Thul-Hijjah. This time of sacrifice, however, extends up
to the sunset of the 13th day of the same month. Sheep, goats, cows or
camels can be offered as sacrifice. Regarding this important act of
worship, Allah says (S108 A1-3): "To you We have granted Al-Kauthar (a
river in Paradise). . Therefore to your Lord turn in prayer and
sacrifice. For he who hates you, he will be cut off from future hope."
He also says (S6 A162): "Say: `Truly, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living
and my dying, are all for Allah, the Lord of the Worlds .."'
* Islamic ruling regarding sacrifice:
Scholars have differed on whether offering sacrifice is obligatory or
recommendable. However, the majority of the scholars ruled that it is
recommendable and they based their ruling on the following Hadith:
- Umm Salamah reported that Allah's Messenger, salla Allah-u alaihe wa
salam, said: "When anyone of you intends to offer sacrifice, then as
soon as the month of Thul-Hijjah begins, he should not have his hair cut
or nails clipped." Muslim
- Jundub reported: On the day of sacrifice, the Prophet, salla Allah- u
alaihe wa salam, performed the prayer, delivered the Khutbah and then
offered the sacrifice and said: "Anybody who slaughtered before the
prayer should slaughter another animal in place of it, and the one who
has not yet slaughtered should slaughter and mention Allah's Name on
it." Bukhari.
* Forbidden acts for whoever intends to offer sacrifice:
It is forbidden for whoever intends to offer sacrifice to cut his hair
or clip his nails from the first day of Thul-Hijjah until he has
sacrificed the animal. Umm Salamah reported Allah's Messenger, salla
Allah-u alaihe wa salam, to have said: "He who has a sacrificial animal
with him which he intends to offer as sacrifice, then as soon as the
month of Thul-Hijjah starts, he should not have his hair cut or his
nails clipped until he has sacrificed the animal." Muslim.
* Conditions for sacrificial animal:
The animal must be free of blemishes and not to be: 1- one-eyed, 2-
sick, 3- lame, 4- aged , 5- with a cut in the ear or a break in the horn
(such that more than one third of it is removed). The first four
conditions are based on the following saying of the Prophet, salla
Allah-u alaihe wa salam, : "Four animals cannot be offered as
sacrifices: The clearly one-eyed, the clearly sick, the clearly lame and
the aged which does not have fat or enough meat." Ahmad.
For the fifth condition, Ali, radia Allahu anhu, said that the
Messenger, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, ordered us to check the
sacrificial animal carefully for any blemish. Ibn Maajah.
* Time of sacrifice
Sacrifice has to be offered after Eid prayer. Animals slaughtered before
prayer are not accepted as sacrifice, as mentioned in the Hadith
narrated by Jundub (mentioned above). The days for offering sacrifice
are the day of Eid (10th day of Thul- Hijjah) and the three days that
follow it (called Tashriq days). The Messenger, salla Allah-u alaihe wa
salam, said: "All Tashriq days (11th, 12th and 13th day of Thul-Hijjah)
are for sacrifice." Ahmad.
* Sharing a cow or a camel: either one can suffice as a sacrifice for
seven people:
Jaabir said: "We offered sacrifice with the Messenger, salla Allah-u
alaihe wa salam, in Hudaybiah; the camel for seven people and the cow
for seven people." Muslim
* Laying the sacrificial animal down:
It is more desirable to lay down the sheep and cows to be slaughtered
and not perform the sacrifice while they are standing or kneeling;
'Aishah said: "The Messenger held the arm of the animal, laid it down,
and slaughtered it." Muslim. An-Nawawi said: "Scholars agreed that the
sacrifices should be laid on their left side." However, for camels, it
is a Sunnah to slaughter them while standing. Anas said that the
Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, slaughtered seven camels with
his own hands while the camels were standing. Bukhari.
* Facing Qiblah while sacrificing:
Facing Qiblah while slaughtering is the Sunnah of the Prophet as it was
narrated by Jaabir Ibn Abdullah that "the Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe
wa salam, sacrificed two horned rams which were white with black
markings and had been castrated. When he made them face the Qiblah, he
said ... "Abu Dawud. It was also reported that Ibn Umar used to dislike
eating from a sacrifice that was slaughtered while not facing the
Qiblah.
* What should be said during the offering:
Jaabir said that the Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, offered, on
the Eid day, two rams and said: "In the name of Allah and Allah is the
Greatest. O Allah! This sacrifice is from you and unto you (Bismillahe
Wallahu Akbar. Allahumma Hatha Minka Wa Elayka)." Abu Dawood.
* The description of slaughtering:
Anas said: "The Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, slaughtered (as
sacrifice) two rams, black and white in color, and I saw him putting his
foot on their sides and mentioning Allah's name and saying Allahu Akbar
then he slaughtered them with his own hands." Bukhari. It is a Sunnah to
sharpen the blade before slaughtering. The Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe
wa salam, said: "Allah has prescribed benevolence for everything. When
you kill for the cause of Allah, be benevolent, and when you slaughter,
be benevolent, sharpen your blade and relieve your sacrifice." Muslim.
* A whole family can offer a single sheep:
Tirmithi and Ibn Maajah reported that Abu Ayyuub said: "During the time
of the Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, a man would sacrifice a
sheep for himself and his family as well, they would eat and feed others
from it."
* Offering sacrifice on someone's behalf:
It is permissible for anyone to delegate someone else to perform
sacrifice on his behalf as indicated by the Hadith narrated by Jaabir
about the pilgrimage of the Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam. He
went and slaughtered sixty three camels then gave the blade to Ali to
slaughter the rest (there were one hundred camels). Muslim.
* It is not allowable to sell some of the sacrificed animal:
Ali said: "The Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, instructed me to
supervise the slaughtering of camels and to distribute their meat,
skins, and covering sheets in charity and not to give any part of their
bodies to the butcher as wages for slaughtering." Bukhari.
* Distribution of the meat:
It is a Sunnah for the one who offers a sacrifice to eat from it, to
offer some of it to relatives, and to give in charity from it to the
poor. The Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, said: "Eat from it,
feed others from it and store some of it ..." Bukhari.
6. The Ten Days of Thul-Hijjah. .......................... from Juhar Mohammad

The Ten Days of Thul-Hijjah.
In a few days we are going to witness another season of reward. It is
the season that follows the month of Ramadhan. These are the first ten
days of Thul-Hijjah. The Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, said:
"There is no time during which worshipping is more beloved to Allah than
the first ten days of Thul-Hijjah." A companion asked: "Even Jihad for
the sake of Allah?" He answered: " Even Jihad for the sake of Allah,
except a man who went out to make Jihad with his body and money and did
not come back with any of them." Related by al-Bukhari. It is
recommended to perform the following acts of worship during these days:
1. Performing Hajj and Umrah.
2. Fasting as many of these days possible especially the day of Arafah
(the 9th day) for those who are not performing Hajj. Muslim narrated
that Qutadah said: "The Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, was
asked about fasting the day of Arafah, he replied: "It expiates the sins
of the previous year and of the coming year."
3. Making Takbeer by saying: Allah-u Akbar Allah-u Akbar la ilaha illa
Allah, Allah-u Akbar Allah-u Akbar wa lillahi al-Hamd. Also, it is
better to do the Takbeer wherever you go: in the markets, at home, in
the mosque....etc. It is narrated in al-Bukhari that when the people at
the market used to hear the Takbeer of ibn-Umar and abu- Hurairah, they
would start making Takbeer too. However, it has not been narrated that
the companions used to make Takbeer in group as is very common nowadays
in many mosques. It is recommended to start saying Takbeer on the 9th
day: On the morning for the non-pilgrims and starting at Dhuhur time for
the Pilgrims. Takbeer should end for all after the Asr of the 13th day
of Thul-Hijjah for pilgrims and non pilgrims alike.
4. Repenting to Allah from all sins, and asking for forgiveness.
5. Doing more voluntary good deeds such as performing supererogatory
prayers, paying charity, making jihad and forbidding evil.
6. Sacrificing an Udh'hiyah. It is the Sunnah of the Prophet, salla
Allah-u alaihe wa salam, to sacrifice in these days. Allah said (S108
A2): " Therefore to the Lord turn in prayer and sacrifice ." When the
Prophet , salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, was asked about sacrifice, he
said:' "It is the Sunnah of your father Ibrahim." They asked: " What
reward do we get for it?" He said: " A reward - a Hasanah- for every
hair of the animal you sacrifice." Ibn Majah.
7. Abstaining from cutting the hair and clipping the nails for the
person who wants to slaughter an animal. Muslim narrated that the
Prophet, salla Allah-u alaihe wa salam, said: " When the month of
Thul-Hijjah begins, and one of you wants to slaughter, he should not cut
his hair or clip his nails."
8. Praying Salat al-Eid in congregation, and attending the Khutbah of
Eid.
9. Celebrating the day of Eid within the allowed manners, and avoiding
the offenses which sometimes take place during these days. 10. Realizing
that these days are days that a Muslim should take advantage of to
worship, thank, and remember Allah, subhanaho wa tallah. By doing so a
Muslim will please Allah, his source of guidance in this life.
