I seek Allah's protection from Satan the rejected one.
Be not like those who are divided amongst themselves and fall
into disputations after receiving clear Signs:For them is a
dreadful Penalty-- On the Day when some faces will be (lit up
with) white , and some faces will be (in the gloom of) black: To
those whose faces will be black, (will be said): "Did ye reject
Faith after accepting it? Taste then the Penalty for rejecting

WASHINGTON - The United States warned Europe Tuesday not to meddle in
negotiations between the Israelis and the PA, saying it was unwise to
try to create a "mini-United Nations" in the Middle East. The Israelis
and the Palestinians the have decided the United States would be "the
sole country" present at the talks that began earlier this month, State
Department spokesman Nicholas Burns said. "You don't want to create a
mini-United Nations in Taba and Eilat," Burns said, referring to towns
that have been the site of negotiations. "You want to have the two
parties and the one indispensable country that has been there for 25 to
30 years," he said.
JERUSALEM - US mediator Dennis Ross was still in the Occupied Palestine
on Tuesday to pursue "significant progress" in Israeli-PA talks after
delaying his announced departure the previous day. Ross said he promised
to return to Washington when "the time is right."
JERUSALEM - Netanyahu apologized to President Jacques Chirac Tuesday
after the French leader protested over intrusive Israeli security
measures during a visit to Jerusalem's Arab Old City. "I want to
apologize for this morning, President Chirac told me what happened in
the Old City," Netanyahu said during a photo session following a meeting
between the two men. "I want to take the opportunity to say that Jacques
Chirac is a very good friend of Israel. What was done was done for a
good cause, to protect a friend," he said.
RASHAYA - Israeli helicopter gunships opened fire Tuesday at fighters of
the Hezbollah inside the occupied border zone of south Lebanon, security
sources said.
KABUL - Afghanistan's warring factions battled for the final pass
leading to Kabul Tuesday, just 12 kilometers from the capital, as the
ruling Taliban rejected power sharing with the ousted government and
vowed to eradicate its forces. The acting head of the militia's ruling
council in Kabul, Mohammed Hassan told the UN's special envoy to
Afghanistan there could be no political deal with the ex-regime,
Taliban's radio said.
SARAJEVO - Bosnian Serb leader Momcilo Krajisnik signed an oath of
allegiance to Bosnia on Tuesday at the inaugural session of the
country's newly elected collective presidency. Krajisnik, along with his
Muslim and Croat counterparts who make up the three members of the top
ruling body, signed the oath, journalists present during the brief
ceremony in Sarajevo said.
BELGRADE - Montenegrin police have arrested a Bosnian Serb who has
admitted involvement in the murders of 20 Muslims who disappeared
following their abduction almost four years ago, Tanjug news agency said
Tuesday. Quoting a police statement Tanjug said that Nebojsa
Ranisaveljvic, 32, a member of a Bosnian Serb paramilitary group, had
admitted that his unit had kidnapped and executed the Muslims in
February 1993. "We stopped the train in Strpci by force and took off a
group of Muslim civilians who were later all executed," Tanjug quoted
Ranisavljevic as saying in his witness statement.
ANKARA - Rejection of Turkey's bid to join the European Union would be
incomprehensible to Turks, and could only be explained on religious
grounds, Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller said late Monday. Speaking at a
press conference after talks with visiting French European Affairs
Minister Michel Barnier, Ciller said, "Such a refusal could only be
because my country is a Muslim country." Turkey has been trying to join
the European Union since 1987.
TEHRAN - Iran plans to form an Islamic inter-parliamentary union and
held a programming session Tuesday in Tehran, Iranian television
reported. Delegations from eight Muslim countries, including Bangladesh,
Indonesia, Kuwait, Libya, Pakistan, Malaysia, Sudan and Syria, which
were elected in the 96th inter-parliamentary session in Beijing last
month, are attending the two-day session in Tehran. Quoting the head of
the programming committee, Musa Zargar, the report added that this
Islamic legislative union is like the European or Arab parliamentary
unions and is supposed to deal with issues related to the Islamic world.
WASHINGTON - The Pentagon said Tuesday it was notifying 20,000 Gulf War
veterans that they may have been exposed to chemical weapons released in
the demolition of an Iraqi munitions dump. The soldiers were within a 50
kilometer radius of the Kamisiyah munitions dump in southern Iraq when
US troops inadvertently destroyed chemical weapons stored there,
Pentagon spokesman Kenneth Bacon said.
GENEVA - Swiss authorities have put a stop to construction work at the
huge Lake Leman property of Saudi Arabia's King Fahd, judicial sources
said Tuesday. The incident is the latest in a series of stops and delays
since King Fahd decided he would build eleven low-rise villas around his
lakeside palace, in which he has never lived as it was too small to fit
his numerous escort. Besides the villas, expected to cover a total
surface of 0.6 hectares (1.5 acres), the king planned garages to house a
fleet of expensive cars, and an underground network of tunnels linking
one building to the next.
SARAJEVO - Bosnian Serbs have begun targetting Muslim homes in areas
they control to discourage the former owners from returning, a NATO
spokesman said Friday. A series of blasts have been recorded recently
along or close to the mostly depopulated no-man's land separating the
Bosnian Serb entity (RS) from its Muslim-Croat counterpart.
On Thursday morning a patrol from the NATO-led peace force (IFOR)
discovered three houses destroyed by anti-tank mines in a village in
Serb-held central Bosnia, IFOR spokesman Major Brett Boudreau said.
"This is a former Muslim village in RS territory and a place of possible
returns of displaced persons," Boudreau said, adding that at another
nearby village a number of houses had also been destroyed.
JABAL OS-SARAJ - The ousted Afghan government said it staged a joint
attack with its newfound ethnic Uzbek allies and drove the Taleban
militia out of the important Bagram military airbase near Kabul on
Friday. "They were operating together in mixed units. They attacked from
the north and northeast," a senior official at the headquarters of
government military commander Ahmad Shah Masood told reporters. "Now we
have control of all of the airport at Bagram, the main part of the
Taleban force has retreated along the new road back towards Kabul," said
the official, Mirabbuddin Astana.
ISLAMABAD - Pakistan has reached agreement with the International
Monetary Fund (IMF) in talks aimed at releasing loans worth 400 million
dollars, the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) said Friday. The
official agency quoted informed sources as saying State Bank of Pakistan
governor Mohammed Yaqub called Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto from talks
in Washington to say an agreement had been reached. The IMF had earlier
refused to disburse the remaining 400 million dollars of a 600-million
dollar credit the fund had agreed to in December, citing Pakistan's
failure to implement economic reforms.

Mr. Nihad Awad Executive Director Council on American-Islamic Relations
1050 17th St., NW, Ste. 490 Washington, DC 20036
Dear Mr. Awad,
As a candidate for President of the United States, I wish to express my
firm belief that people of all faiths must recognize the contributions
American Muslims have made, and will continue to make, toward the goal
of a family-centered, healthy and productive society. I truly believe
that America draws strength from its churches, synagogues and mosques.
Throughout this country, American Muslims are our neighbors, classmates
and co-workers. Muslim families seek to promote strong moral values and
a commitment to community responsibility. These universal values,
coupled with community service, have been demonstrated to have a
positive impact on problems such as crime, drug use and the breakdown of
the family.
Since the end of the Cold War, many American Muslims have been the
targets of stereotyping, bias and discrimination. This discrimination
has been seen in the workplace, where Muslim workers were denied
reasonable religious accommodation, in schools, and in the media, where
our Muslim citizens are often unfairly associated with acts of violence.
American Muslims, like all citizens, wish to build a better America. As
the Republican Party platform states, I would oppose any legislation
infringing on the rights of American citizens to freedom of religion,
speech, press, assembly, or the right to judicial due process. While
demanding increased security measures for the traveling public, I would
oppose any discriminatory procedures for screening airline passengers
based solely on race, sex, economic status, national origin, or
political beliefs.
As a president of inclusion, I would seek to ensure that all Americans,
irrespective of economic, social, or religious background, have all the
rights and opportunities offered by a free society. I would also seek to
open constructive dialogue with all Muslim countries working for peace,
representing as they do, one-fifth of humanity. A goal of my
Administration would be to support a clear, long-term and even-handed
foreign policy that is consistent with our nation's vital interests.
Sincerely,
Bob Dole

Nihad Awad Executive Director National Council on American-Islamic
Relations Suite 490 1050 17th Street, N.W. Washington, D.C. 20036
Dear Nihad:
Thank you for writing to me. I appreciate your support of my
Administration's actions to increase the safety and security of air
travel, and I understand your concerns regarding issues of
discrimination and privacy that may result from increased security
measures at airports. I have shared your letter with the White House
Commission on Aviation Safety and Security so they will be aware of your
concerns.
As I have cautioned, we must always reserve judgement and avoid ethnic
stereotyping -- which is unacceptable at any time -- especially during a
period when our nation should be coming together. Vice President Gore
has established an advisory group to ensure that individual liberty and
privacy are not violated as we work to develop these security measures.
The Commission is actively seeking non-intrusive ways to assure
Americans that air travel is safe and secure.
I hope you will continue to share with me your thoughts on this
important issue.
Sincerely,
Bill Clinton

Islamic Reality in Jerusalem
From: AKHBAR@YORKU.CA
In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

The following editorial was written in response to a September 29
Washington Post article by Morton A. Klein, national president of the
Zionist Organization of America.
------------------------------------------------------------
THE ISLAMIC REALITY IN JERUSALEM By: Ibrahim Hooper
Morton Klein's editorial attack on Muslim rights in Jerusalem ("The
PLO's War Against Jewish History," The Washington Post, Sept. 29) read
like a Sarajevo tourist brochure written by Radko Mladic. In his
article, Mr. Klein attempted to disprove an Islamic connection to
Jerusalem and to brush aside the Muslim claim that the opening of the
Al-Aqsa tunnel was designed to create Jewish facts on the ground in a
city holy to three faiths. He failed miserably on both counts.
Mr. Klein said, "The Tunnel does not run under, or even adjacent to, any
mosque or other Muslim site in Jerusalem." Facts: According a news
release from the human rights group Al-Haq, "Most of the buildings lying
above the Western Wall tunnel belong to the Islamic Waqf (trust). These
properties include a number of Mamluk buildings of great historical,
architectural and religious importance, including the Madrasa (religious
school) al-Manjakiyya, the Madrasa al-Uthmaniyya, the Ribat Kurd, and
the Madrasa al-Jawhariyya." Al-Haq also said the tunnel entrance opens
beneath the steps of the al-Umariyya School. These facts do not even
take into account the basic truth that Muslims regard the entire Haram
ash-Sharif ("noble sanctuary"), containing as it does the Dome of the
Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque, as sacred. The whole area is threatened by this
and other as yet unopened tunnels and chambers. Why else would Jewish
extremists who wish to destroy the Muslim holy sites be celebrating so
openly?
He said Palestinians spread "lies that the Jerusalem tunnel somehow
threatens Muslim sites in the city." Now what could possibly lead
Muslims to that conclusion? Could it be the Israeli Airlines
advertisement showing the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque replaced
with a new Jewish Temple? Could it be reports as early as 1989 that
Talmudic schools located near the Western Wall were teaching students
the details of Temple service and animal sacrifice? (Time Magazine, Oct.
16, 1989) Could it be the damage done to Muslim buildings by previous
diggings, the 1969 arson attack on Al-Aqsa Mosque, the foiled attempt to
blow up the Dome of the Rock, or the shooting deaths of 17 Palestinians
who challenged Jewish extremists when they sought to lay a Temple
"cornerstone" at the holy sites?
These were not isolated incidents or occurrences. Each one is the result
of an ideology, which Mr. Klein seems to share, that seeks to erase all
traces of faiths other than Judaism from Jerusalem. In the last few
months alone, occupation authorities have demolished Palestinian
buildings, ordered the expansion of Jewish-only settlements on occupied
lands and prevented the free transit of workers and essential supplies.
Muslim and Christian Palestinians are routinely barred by Israel from
religious sites in Jerusalem. The Christian population of Jerusalem
drops daily.
Mr. Klein wrote: "This (the tunnel's archeological evidence) shatters
the Arab propaganda claim that historically, Jerusalem has been an Arab
city." His dismissal of Islamic rights is accompanied by a number of
other statements supporting the Muslim claim that the allegedly
innocently-opened tunnel is really a tool to be used in creating a city
in which only one faith is accommodated. Mr. Klein refers to the tunnel
providing "vivid testimony to the 3,000-plus years of Jewish history in
Jerusalem." He says people will see "the physical evidence of thousands
of years of the Jewish connection to Jerusalem...testifying to the long
Jewish presence...evidence of Jerusalem's deep Jewish roots." Such
claims ignore not only the Muslim presence, but that of the Amorites,
Hyksos, Canaanites, Egyptians, Philistines, Romans, Assyrians,
Babylonians, Persians, Byzantines, Crusaders, and all other peoples who
lived, before and after the arrival of Hebrew tribes, in that same land
throughout the millennia.
Only someone dedicated to an exclusivist vision of history could so
easily refer to the "the centuries of Muslim occupation of the city."
Would Mr. Klein have us believe the millions of Muslim and Christian
inhabitants over the centuries were merely squatters waiting until the
rightful Jewish owners returned? Does Mr. Klein believe Christianity has
a similarly temporary presence in Jerusalem?
Another allegation states that the recent carnage resulted from
incitement of Palestinian "mobs." But according to the Reuters news
service (9/30): "Israeli commanders in the Gaza Strip were quoted Monday
as saying indiscriminate shooting by Jewish settlers and Israeli
soldiers ignited the bloodiest day of clashes in the strip last week."
The article went on to describe settlers stopping Palestinian cars at
roadblocks and beating the occupants.
Mr. Klein's most ludicrous allegation is also the most easily refuted.
He wrote, "Jerusalem is not mentioned even once in the Koran..." First
of all, the Muslim attachment to Jerusalem does not begin with the
Prophet Muhammad, it begins with the Prophets Abraham, David, Solomon
and Jesus, who are also Prophets in Islam.
Second, Jerusalem is mentioned in the Quran, Islam's revealed text, and
in Islamic traditions. One of these hadith (deeds and utterances of the
Prophet Muhammad recorded by his companions) states that prayers in
Al-Aqsa M osque are multiplied 500 times. Another companion reported:
"Once I asked Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) what was the first mosque
established on earth; he said Al-Masjid Al-Haram (in Mecca). Then I
asked him: Then which mosque? He replied: Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa..."
Perhaps Mr. Klein looked up "Jerusalem" in an Arabic dictionary and
failed to find a listing. That is because, as Mr. Klein must know,
Arabic speakers call Jerusalem "al-Quds" ("The Holy") and the Quran
refers to Jerusalem by its Islamic centerpiece, Al-Aqsa Mosque. Chapter
17, verse 1, of the Quran states: "Glorified be He (God) who took his
servant (Muhammad) for a journey by night from al-Masjid al-Haram (in
Mecca) to al-Masjid al-Aqsa (in Jerusalem), whose precincts we have
blessed..." The night journey referred to in this verse is that of the
Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Jerusalem, and from the rock now located
in the Dome of the Rock, to heaven. This event, known as "al-Isra wa
al-Miraj," is marked each year by millions of Muslims worldwide.
Mr. Klein also did not tell his readers that Jerusalem was Islam's first
"Qibla," or direction to which Muslims turned in prayer, or that the
very walls of the Old City, of which the Israeli tourist board is so
proud, were built by Muslims. He also fails to mention the fact that
throughout centuries of Islamic rule, the holy sites of Judaism and
Christianity were never permanently altered, as they could have been had
the desire to seize or destroy been present. In fact, Muslims are proud
of the story of the Caliph Umar who received the keys to Jerusalem from
the patriarch Sophronius in the 7th century. When the Caliph was asked
to pray in a Jerusalem church, he refused saying he did not want provide
a pretext for Muslims to appropriate a Christian holy site. If only
today's rulers, and Islamophobic pundits, were so wise.
