I seek Allah's protection from Satan the rejected one.
Be not like those who are divided amongst themselves and fall
into disputations after receiving clear Signs:For them is a
dreadful Penalty-- On the Day when some faces will be (lit up
with) white , and some faces will be (in the gloom of) black: To
those whose faces will be black, (will be said): "Did ye reject
Faith after accepting it? Taste then the Penalty for rejecting
Faith." But those whose faces will be (lit with) white--They
will be in (the Light Of) Allah's mercy; therin to dwell
(forever).

Intro: New York -- one of the world's most ethnically complex cities --
has become an even more diverse city in recent years and nowhere is that
more eveident than in its growing number of mosques. VOA's Milica
Boskovic visited a new exhibit about those mosques and filed this
report.
Tape: cut one
Text: the "Mosques of New York" -- an exhibit in a small storefront
gallery -- highlights the diverse Muslim community in New York, a
community made up of both American-born Muslims and immigrants from the
arab world and such countries as Bosnia, Pakistan, Afganistan and
Guyana. Gallery curator Jerrilynn Dodds says the city's Muslim community
has been shaped by many social and cultural forces.
Tape: cut two
"When Muslims come to New York, they have to create a community in which
all these different groups participate. So a new kind of architectural
marker from the outside is being developed slowly by which these Muslims
represent themselves as one unified community which isn't based on
ethnic difference, but based on the common experience of being a Muslim,
the common social practice of being a Muslim."
Text: In addition to the diversity in cultures, says Ms. Dodds, New
York's Muslim community and its mosques have been influenced by
interaction with a non-Muslim urban environment. The Muslims in New
York, she adds, are not only trying to protect their traditional way of
life, but are creating a new identity. It is a Muslim community, says
community leader Dad Asaad, "whose links now supercede national
identities." The city's Muslim community, curator Jerrilynn Dodds says,
has been tranformed by the urban environment, while at the same time its
presence has transformed the city as well.
Tape: cut three
"Those little arches and domes are becoming markers that you see
throughout the city and they're transforming the city, and they're
developing a very positive association in New York. Because people see
them as the mark of a transformation and of a very benevolent kind of
community presence once they're used to it. So these buildings are
helping to change the American vision of what a Muslim is because after
all these Muslims are Americans too."
Text: The mosques in New York are as diverse as the city's Muslim
community. There are now more than 70 Mosques -- or Masjids -- in the
city. Only six were originally designed as Mosques. The others are
converted storefront buildings, lofts, stores, and warehouses. They
provide a place for prayer and a sense of community. The mosques vary
from unadorned buildings to monumental forms with arches and domes.
Iasha al-Adawiya is a member of an Islamic culture center in New York
and appears on a videotape at the exhibit.
Tape: cut four
"The Masjid is not a building, the Masjid is a concept. And the concept
embodies all aspects of our physical existence. This is the place where
Muslims have traditionally gone to get instructions to live by. The dome
doesn't mean anything in particular to me. If it's a dome that houses
some very dynamic activity that speaks to the needs of not only Muslim
people but to society and humanity, then that's very exciting to me."
Text: The exhibit "New York Masjid: The Mosques of New York" depicts the
interaction of the Muslim community and the city, and how the
multi-cultural, multi-ethnic make up of the community places emphasis on
the needs of the city's Muslims, rather than on ethnic and national
difference. Layla Bahbahani is a member of another Islamic center in New
York.
Tape: cut five
"There is only one Islam, but there are many cultures in new york that
represent Islam. And there are as many kinds of mosques. In New York the
most fabulous thing is that Muslims from all over the world will gather
and pray together as one."
Text: Curator Jerrilynn Dodds -- a professor of architecture -- says the
exhibit -- in a small, storefront gallery -- is designed to explore the
dimensions of the Muslim community in New York.
Tape: cut six
"The fact that this gallery has chosen to make this show, shows how
anxious people are to acknowledge how constructive Islam is within the
community, to begin seeing Islam in many different ways within the
community, not just as a threat or something which is 'other.'"
Tape: cut seven
Text: The exhibit photographer, Ed Grazda, adds his hope that the
exhibit will heighten the awareness of New Yorkers about the city's
Muslim community and show people places they would not normally notice.

## Jordanian Al-Sabeel reported that Hamas bloc had won the elections
held for the student council last week in the largest Palestinian
University, Al-Najah in Nablus. The election was delayed by the
Palestinian Authority for more than 6 months, fearing of Hamas winning.
As of now, with the exception of Bethlehem University, all Palestinian
university student councils in the West Bank are being held by Hamas,
including BirZeit, Hebron, and Jerusalem.
## PA Educational Ministry renamed most of Palestinian schools in West
Bank and Gaza Strip. Names of schools after Palestian cities like Haifa,
Acre, Beir Sabba, which are presently under the Zionist Occupation, are
replaced with names after Fatah popular figures like Khalil al-Wazir.
Haifa, Acre, and Beir Sabba are considered Israeli cities under the Oslo
Accords.
## Hamas held last Friday in Khan Yunis, Gaza, a rally honoring the
anniversary of the martyrdom of the Engineer Yahiah Ayash. More than 40
thousands supporter from all cities in Gaza Strip.
## According to details of the agreement (Hebron deal) that have
emerged, Israeli troops will withdraw from most of Hebron, a city of
120,000 Palestinians, but will retain control over the Israeli enclaves,
as well as some roads, vantage points and Arab neighborhoods that they
claim they need to ensure the safety of the Jews. As a result, Israeli
soldiers will continue to have direct control in areas inhabited by
about 120,000 palestiniens.Serge Schmemann writes from Jerusalem, The
New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, November 14.
## The third Middle East and North Africa Economic Conference, MENA III,
opened in Cairo yesterday in a climate of outright hostility-for the
Muharwalun are on the run. The Muharwalun- those who "rush" or "scurry"-
are now a key concept in Arab political discourse. The Syrian poet Nizar
Kabbani coined the phrase after the Oslo Accord and the historic
handshake on the White House lawn between Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser
Arafat: "We have queued up like sheep for the slaughter, we have rushed
and panted to lick the assassins' boots..." The rush to "normalise" with
a triumphant Israel is now derided by those who see it as a mark of Arab
weakness. David Hirst writes from Cairo, The Guardian, November 13.
## The conversation hovers around catastrophe. It is not only among
Arabs, in Europe and among some in the United States that Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu's conduct of Israeli policy is causing distress and
deep concern about Middle East peace. Many Israelis voice their fears in
even stronger terms. There has never been such an open, harsh, angry
split in Israeli opinion.. The big question everybody asks is what his
real intentions are in continuing negotiations, and nobody presumes to
know for sure. Flora Lewis writes from Jerusalem, The International
Herald Tribune, November 22.
## An Israeli military court has convicted four soldiers of negligently
shooting to death an 18-year old Palestinian in the West Bank. Then it
passed a sentence: one hour in jail, suspended, and a fine of one
Israeli agora, just under one-third of a U.S. cent. It was not the first
time that soldiers here got off lightly for killing an Arab in haste.
Independent investigators count 1251 cases in which Israeli troops
killed Palestinians during and after the 1987-93 uprising in the Israeli
occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. Barton Gellman writes from Jerusalem,
Washington Post (IHT), November 20.
## Occupied Jerusalem - PT:Israeli soldiers raiding Palestinian homes
have recently resorted to "stripping Palestinian women naked" as the
latest form of humiliation against the people of Hebron.
Palestinian and Israeli human rights activists cited two recent cases in
which Palestinian women were stripped naked by Israeli soldiers. The
first took place on 18 November when Israeli troops stormed the home of
the Abu Mayyaleh family in downtown Hebron. According to family sources,
Israeli soldiers forced the pregnant housewife at gun point to strip
naked and beat her afterwards. The Israeli force was searching for
weapons. The other case took place on the night of 27 November at the Al
Kawasmeh family home. According to Betselem, the Israeli Human Rights
organisation, Israeli soldiers raided the home of Yunis al Kawasmeh,
forcing four women at gun point to strip naked.

Islam In America
In the United States a sleeping giant is emerging - living and growing
in the hearts of millions of Americans aiding and healing the wounds of
injustice, racism and immorality. It rises from the ashes of slavery,
calling those who suffer from its wounds. It comes also from the western
shores of Africa to the Horn, from the streets of India and Pakistan,
Malaysia, China, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Palestine, from the conservative
country sides of Europe to the Arabian Sea from all points East, West,
North and South they come to join those here in the celebration of Islam
has been awakened in America.
There are an estimated 5 to 8 millions Muslims currently in the United
States, and by the year 2010, if the present trends continue, that
number will double to 10 to 16 million. There is no question that Islam
is alive and growing in America. Dr. John R. Weeks, Director of the
International Population Center, San Diego State University, a noted
demographer and author of the Demography of Islamic Nations, states,
"There can be no question that the Muslim population in this country is
large and is growing at a fairly rapid pace." The estimated rate of
conversion to Islam among Americans is 135,000 per year (35,000 of this
number come from those who are incarcerated ). The contributing factors
to our growth rate are immigration, propagation, and fertility.
The conversion of Americans is the highest in correctional institutions
and in the inner cities. The Muslim experience is researched in three
categories: immigrants, Americans converts, and those born of both
groups. The ethnic percentages are: 42% African American, 24.4% South
Asian (Indian subcontinents), 12.4% Arabs, 5.2% Africans, 3.6% Persians,
2.4% Turks, 2% South East Asian, 1.6% American Whites, 0.8% Albanians,
all other groups represent 5.6%.
The ten states with the most concentrated Muslim population are:
California, New York, Illinois, New Jersey, Indiana, Michigan, Virginia,
Texas, Ohio, and Maryland (listed in order of population). This
represent 3.3 million of the American Muslim population.
There are more than 1,000 mosques, 400 Islamic schools (108 full time),
5 colleges, over 400 associations, an estimated 200,000 business, and
over 80 publications, journals weekly newspaper, etc. In 1930, there
were 19 mosques by 1960 more than 230 by 1980 over 600.
During the Parisian Gulf war more then 3,000 American soldiers embraced
Islam. The Department of Defence reports that currently there are
approximately 9,000 Muslims on active duty in the United States armed
services. Within America's federal and state correctional facilities
there are over 300,000 inmates or those who claim Islam as their
religious preference. This figure has an impact on three times that
number, more than half a million people are directly affected by their
incarceration.
Muslims in America represent almost every ethnic group in the world.
There is a myth that Muslims are a house divided; separate. This is an
untruth. Fact: no matter what walk of life we are from as Muslims, we
agree that the Qur'an is the word of Allah Ta'ala. We agree that the
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is the last prophet that will come to this
world, and that his Sunnah sets the tone for human behaviour. However,
we fail to realize the magnitude of our unity because we fail to
understand the dynamics of our population. Once this is realized our
unity as a Muslim people will be unquestioned natural.

Muslim Brotherhood
My name is Doug Fries and I am pursuing a masters degree in
International Relations from Troy State University in Alabama. In my
International Organizations class I have been assigned to write a paper
on the Muslim Brotherhood.
Unfortunately, direct information on this organization is difficult to
find here in the United States. I have been searching around the
Internet, hoping to find some information on the Muslim Brotherhood. Via
the Islamic Gateway home page, I have found several interesting sites
and either read or downloaded much interesting information about Islam,
your culture, and Islamic politics in various countries.
If you have any information on the Muslim Brotherhood, I would be very
grateful if you could send it to me. I am particulary interested in the
organization's history (both early and recent), its organization, and
its goals and how they have evolved over the years. If you do not have
any information but could supply either a postal address or Internet
location that may be able to help, that would also be fantastic. With
your information, I can put together a great paper to inform my
classmates and instructor about this influential group.
Thank you for your time,
