Friday, Muharram 27, 1417 - June 14, 1996
NAIROBI - Human Rights Watch Africa said about 100 teenage boys were
forcibly recruited from the U.N.-administered Fugnido refugee camp by
the SPLA and sent into battle against Sudan's government troops.
PARIS - Several Europe-based bulletins close to Algeria's Islamic
Salvation Front (FIS) reported that tensions are mounting within the
Algerian army, and that a prominent military leader had been
assassinated as a result of these internal conflicts.
JERUSALEM - A PLO military court ordered Palestinian human rights
campaigner Iyad al-Sarraj, jailed in the past for criticising
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's administration, held for 15 days,
his lawyer said.
SARAJEVO - NATO officials say the Western alliance is unlikely to
certify the removal of Iranian "foreign forces" from Bosnia any time
soon. NATO intelligence estimates there are still about 100 Iranians in
Bosnia who worked closely with the Bosnian-Muslim military in the past
four years. The office of mission commander Adm. Leighton Smith has said
the Bosnian government is the only party not to have honored the Dayton
requirement on foreign forces.
Saturday, Muharram 28 - June 15
MANAMA - French President Jacques Chirac sent a message of support to
Bahrain assuring the Gulf emirate of France's backing for its attempts
to 'restore order and stability', the Bahraini agency GNA said.
CAIRO - The military trial of 13 members of the outlawed Egyptian group
the Muslim Brotherhood began in Cairo. At the beginning of the session,
the defendants announced their refusal of court-appointed lawyers,
saying they consider their trial "unconstitutional" and demanding trial
before a civilian court, legal sources said.
TEHRAN - Iran said 150,000 Revolutionary Guards would hold military
exercises code-named "Road to Jerusalem."
Sunday, Muharram 29 - June 16
JERICHO - Around 60 Palestinian Islamists imprisoned by the Palestinian
Authority said they had been on a hunger strike for five days in a bid
to force their release. The members of the Islamic Resistance Movement
(HAMAS) and the Islamic Jihad, who are being held in a Jericho jail,
said in a statement: "We want it to be known that we have been on hunger
strike since Tuesday, and will continue until we are returned to our
families."
MANAMA: UN inspectors had a "very bad experience" in one of their
toughest missions yet in Iraq when authorities refused access to
suspected weapons sites, team leader Nikita Smidovich said.
ANKARA - New explosions have been reported in northern parts of Syria
over the past week and the Syrian army has reinforced its forces near
the Turkish border, Turkey's semi-official Anatolian news agency said.
BEIRUT - Arab Muslim and Christian religious leaders meeting in Beirut
said Israel must stop its "crimes" against Jerusalem Arabs and Muslim
and Christian holy places in the city. The clerics, at a meeting called
by the Council of Middle East Churches, also expressed fears that a
regional peace settlement may deny Palestinians an independent state
with Jerusalem as its capital.
GAZA - Palestinians charged Israeli soldiers of causing the death of
Ibrahim Sirsawi, 34,a heart patient by delaying his entry from Gaza for
treatment by three hours. Israel has maintained a closure on the West
Bank and Gaza Strip, home to over two million Palestinians, since
February.
Monday, Muharram 30 - June 17
BEIRUT - Lebanon's foreign and information ministers protested Israel's
detention of an Agence France-Presse correspondent after his arrest in
the Israeli-occupied "security zone" in south Lebanon. Ali Diya, 44, who
also works for Lebanese Future Television station and the daily As-Safir
newspaper, was arrested on June 13. The Israeli army confirmed it was
holding Diya on suspicion of collaborating with Hezbollah. Israel
originally denied it had detained the reporter.
SARAJEVO - The Dayton peace plan for Bosnia was dealt a further blow
when separatist Croats named a new government for their mini-state of
Herceg-Bosna - which was supposed to disappear under the agreement
signed last year.
MANAMA - A British minister said that his government had a "deep
interest" in ensuring that stability in Bahrain was maintained and that
Iran desisted from sponsoring "outside activities". Bahrain was an
"important ally" and "very old friend" of Britain, said Jeremy Hanley,
minister of state for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. Hanley added
Iran "is guilty of sponsoring terrorist activities, stirring up
differences and inciting violence" in Gulf Arab states like Bahrain.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Mahmud Mohammadi rejected accusations
made by Hanley saying: "Unfortunately it appears that there are still
some old British diplomats who still feel protective toward the
countries of the region". "Such unfounded and irrelevant declaration" is
a testimony to Britain's "colonial policies in the Persian Gulf," he
added.
THE HAGUE - The United Nations war crimes tribunal in The Hague released
a Serb accused of crimes against humanity in the former Yugoslavia,
citing lack of evidence.
PARIS - Two Algerian courts sentenced 27 Muslims to death in absentia

the Iran Oil Sanctions Act, which calls for US sanctions on oil
companies that invest 40 million dollars or more in Iranian oil and gas.
The measure would also empower the president to sanction companies that
violate UN embargoes against Libya. The White House hailed and indicated
that President Bill Clinton could sign it soon. "The general thrust of
our policy is that we have to do what we can to isolate a rogue regime
like Iran which shows no evidence at all of moderating its behavior"
White House spokesman Mike McCurry said.
UNITED NATIONS - The United Nations ended its arms embargo against the
former Yugoslav republics, following an agreement on the number of heavy
weapons in the region.
AMMAN - HAMAS called for Arab countries to help it in struggle against
Israel. "It is time to close ranks and reactivate the Jihad against
Zionist occupation with the arrival of Netanyahu," said Ibrahim Ghoshe,
the spokesman for the Islamic Resistance Movement (HAMAS) in Amman.

Muslims Succeed With Media and Corporations
In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful
MUSLIMS SUCCEED WITH MEDIA AND CORPORATIONS
(WASHINGTON, DC - 6/18/96) - Alhamdulillah, your efforts achieved
positive results once again. Muslims in America and around the world who
responded to CAIR's recent action alerts have scored important
victories. These efforts must continue (see the form below). Muslims are
now appearing on media and corporate sensitivity "radar screens."
1) MAGAZINE EDITOR APOLOGIZES FOR DEFAMING PROPHET MUHAMMAD
In response to a CAIR action alert, Muslims worldwide contacted U.S.
News & World Report to protest a June 10 editorial in which that
magazine's editor-in-chief, Mortimer Zuckerman, claimed the Prophet
Muhammad had a "doctrine" of deceit in making treaties with enemies
while he was weak and violating them when he was strong.
On June 17, the magazine published a "Crosstalk" article in which it
tried to clarify its position by blaming Yasser Arafat for the remarks.
Mr. Zuckerman also called CAIR to explain his position. He was told that
his magazine's statement was insufficient and that a more explicit
apology was needed. In the June 24 issue, an editorial note went further
in stating, "...We deeply regret any ambiguity in the language; Mr.
Zuckerman meant no insult. He was referring to Mr. Arafat's reference to
the Prophet and did not intend to state that this was the doctrine of
the Prophet...it was the Meccans, not the prophet Muhammad, who broke
the peace of Hudaybiah of 628."
2) MAGAZINE APOLOGIZES FOR PHOTO/COCA COLA CLARIFIES USE OF LOGO
Another CAIR alert described an offensive photo in the June issue of
Life magazine. The photo (p. 98) showed a Muslim praying in front of a
Coca-Cola cooler. The worshiper and the logo on the cooler were shown in
such a way as to suggest that the man was "praying" to the Coke logo.
The caption read: "It's only natural for a man of religion to try to
quench his spiritual thirst...In his search for truth, he turned toward
Mecca - and just happened to find the Real Thing."
In a letter to CAIR, Coca Cola spokesperson Robert E. Baskin wrote, "The
photograph and text are not an advertisement for Coca-Cola. The Coca
Cola Company...would never have condoned the use of our trademarks in a
context so clearly insensitive to Islam...The Coca Cola Company
immediately contacted Life magazine to register a strong protest." Life
magazine also apologized for the photo. In a letter to the National
Council on Islamic Affairs, Life's managing editor wrote, "We are all
too responsible and I deeply regret that we offended you and many
others..."
3) BEER COMPANY PULLS RADIO COMMERCIAL WITH "MUSLIM" CHARACTER
A member of the Muslim community recently emailed CAIR about a Miller
Brewing Company radio commercial in which a character named "Omar" was
portrayed drinking beer. CAIR contacted the company to protest this
misuse of a respected Muslim name. In response, a company spokesperson
apologized for the advertisement and told CAIR the commercial would be
replaced by one that does not feature a "Muslim" character.
4) MUSIC PRODUCER RECALLS CD WITH OFFENSIVE COVER PHOTO
A member of the New Jersey community sent CAIR a copy of a music CD,
called "Laura at the Harem," that showed a belly dancer, a mosque and
Quranic text on the cover. When contacted by CAIR, the CD's manufacturer
agreed to discontinue production of that cover and to recall copies of
the CD already on store shelves.

Article from CAIR News, Spring/Summer 1996
SILICON VALLEY FIRM SEEKS TO CLOSE MUSLIM SCHOOL
CAIR is assisting an Islamic school and mosque in California's Silicon
Valley facing closure due to persistent legal actions by a nearby
high-tech facility. Leaders of the Islamic community in Santa Clara,
Calif., say LSI Logic Corp., has been attempting to close Granada
Elementary School since it opened two years ago. LSI Logic claims the
presence of children so close to its facility causes an unspecified
financial burden. Local Muslims say closing the school would result in
great hardship for students, parents and teachers.
In a news article about the dispute (San Francisco Chronicle, 1/13/96),
The Reverend Herb Schmidt, Lutheran Pastor at Stanford University said,
"We are deeply concerned that if this was a synagogue or a Roman
Catholic parochial school, this (the lawsuit) would not be happening."

Masjid in Atlanta ?
AsSalamu Alaikum,
I will be moving to Atlanta, GA next week. I was wondering if there are
any brothers out in Atlanta who could give me the addresses of the
masjids in the vicinity. I will also be looking for apartment complexes
close to the masjid, and would appreciate any information. Jazaka Allahu
Khairan for any help.
As Salamu Alaikum, Murat Gunsay
