I seek refuge in Allah from the rejected Satan. In the name of
Allah the Most Beneficient, the Most Merciful.
002.238 Guard strictly your (habit of) prayers, especially the
Middle Prayer; and stand before God in a devout (frame of mind).
002.239 If ye fear (an enemy), pray on foot, or riding, (as may
be most convenient), but when ye are in security, celebrate
God's praises in the manner He has taught you, which ye knew not
(before).
NOTES & COMMENTARY (by Ishaq Zahid):
The translation of the above verses is taken from Abdullah Yusuf
Ali's text. The Arabic words for the "Middle Prayer" are
"Salatul Wusta." Wusta may be translated as the middle position
and it may also imply excellence of its Mudaf Salah. According
to the views of the Sahabah Karam, it may refer to the Fajr
Salah, or the Asr salah. However it could also mean a prayer
which is done with full devotion in its excellent manner. For
more explanation, please see Tafsir texts.
Verse 239 shows the paramount importance of offering Salah.

2,500 COLORADANS TURN OUT FOR MOSQUE OPEN HOUSE Five people accept Islam
on day of event
(WASHINGTON, DC - 4/2/96) - Leaders of the Denver, Colo., Muslim
community say some 2,500 people turned out for a mosque open house
prompted by the March 19 intrusion into that facility by employees of a
local radio station.* Many local dignitaries, including Denver's mayor
and the U.S. Attorney in Denver, attended the open house. Those who came
to the mosque received Islamic information in materials such as CAIR's
"Welcome to Our Mosque" brochure. The open house also included food from
around the Muslim world, cultural displays and guided tours of the
mosque.
A spokesperson for the Denver mosque says that five people embraced
Islam on the day of the open house. Alhamdulillah. According to the
mosque representative, at least two of these people said they hesitated
to come to the mosque in the past (believing they might not be
accepted), but that the warm welcome they received encouraged the final
step of taking shahadah.
The Colorado Muslim community has also reached a settlement with the
radio station. The settlement, details of which were announced at the
open house, includes published and broadcast apologies by the radio
station, an internship program for Muslim youth who wish to pursue
careers in broadcasting, sensitivity training for station employees
involved in the incident, and the broadcast of public service
announcements and programs offering a positive image of Islam. Muslim
community leaders turned down an offer of monetary compensation from the
radio station.
"The recent events in Colorado prove that positive results may be gained
even from negative incidents. The Colorado community's pro-active
response to this incident is a clear example for all of us," said CAIR
Executive Director Nihad Awad. Awad traveled to Denver to assist the
local leadership and to arrange meetings with state and federal law
enforcement officials.
[*The intruders, one wearing a mock turban and a Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf
T-shirt, burst into the mosque playing the national anthem on a trumpet
after morning worship services. They proceeded to harass and intimidate
the worshipers while broadcasting the incident live on the radio. Five
people have been charged as a result of the stunt.]
IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUESTED:
1) Plan a MOSQUE OPEN HOUSE in your area on the second day of this
year's Eid ul-Adha. Use the publicity you generate for Eid to announce
the open house. (For example, when the local TV station shows your Eid
celebration, the end of their story should announce the open house. A
newspaper story the day after Eid would do the same.)
2) Call CAIR to receive the "Hajj and Eid ul-Adha Publicity Resource
Kit," and the "Mosque Open House Project" and "Welcome to Our Mosque"
brochures.

Intro: An organization representing more than a billion Muslims
worldwide is trying to improve the image of Islam. VOA's Joe De Capua
(dee-cap-oo-ah) says in doing so, the group must solve both internal and
external problems.
Text: The organization of the Islamic conference, the OIC, sees many
reasons for a misunderstanding of Islam around the world. Among them, it
cites militants and biased coverage by the Western media.
But the OIC also faces an image problem of its own. Professor Sulayman
Nyang, of Howard University in Washington, blames that on power
struggles within the organization.
/// Nyang act ///
The reason why you will have a reaction from so many Muslims is the fact
that the OIC is seen as the council of the presidents. Whereas, in the
Muslim world you have groups that are trying to seize power in the
individual countries. Those groups will certainly see the Islamic
conference as an extension of the governments they are fighting against.
/// end act ///
Professor Nyang says as Muslims scrutinize their national leaders, there
are growing doubts as to the legitimacy of those who claim to speak for
the Muslim world.
Professor Nyang says one of the issues to be resolved is, what he calls,
political Islam.
/// Nyang act ///
Political Islam, meaning that body of opinion among Muslims who feel
that Islam should be restored to glory by virtue of capturing state
power. And making the state an instrument of the religion. The second
problem is the question of reinforcing the cultural identity of Muslims.
/// end act ///
He says some Muslims and Westerners alike confuse the concepts of
Westernization and modernization.
Then, there is the issue of militants and how they are portrayed in the
media.
/// Nyang act ///
Do you identify the person who perpetrates the violent act as an
individual member of a political organization. Or are you just going to
identify him strictly in terms of religious affiliation. This
unidimensional characterization of the person lumps him together with
members of a larger category, in this particular case, Muslims and
Islam.
/// end act ///
The Howard University Professor also says there needs to be a better
dialogue between Muslims in the United States and those abroad.
/// Nyang act ///
Your counterparts, your co-religionists, who are on this side of the
atlantic, find themselves in a predominantly secular political culture
where there is ample room for the pursuit of one's religious beliefs.
And a new theology, what I call, the theology of pluralism.
/// end act ///
Sulayman Nyang says non-Muslims need to be educated about Islam to
better understand the similarities among Islam, christianity and
judaism. He says if they were, they would not be so fascinated by the
differences. The organization of the Islamic conference says it will
stress Islam's universal values, and its openness to all schools of
thought and ideas.
/// rest opt ///
One of the names that usually comes up during discussion of Islam in the
United States is Louis Farrakhan, leader of the group known as "The
Nation of Islam". Mr. Nyang says many Muslims overseas simply know him
as an African-American leader who says he's a Muslim. but he says his
teachings differ sharply from mainstream Islam.
/// Nyang act ///
This man calls himself a Muslim, but listen, here are the theological
points he has in mind. And, of course, once they begin to know that
point number one, that God came in the person of Prophet Mohammed, those
Muslims who know anything about their tradition would know that this guy
is committing shirk. Meaning he's associating partnership with god.
Because the anthropomorphism that he puts forth goes against the grain
of Islam. Islam does not accept god in human form.
/// end act ///
Professor Nyang says this is one of major differences between Islam and
christianity. (signed)

COUNTERPUNCH; THE VILLAINOUS DEPICTION OF MUSLIMS

University
BODY:
I watched in horror and astonishment last night as the Chechen "Mafia"
raped a helpless woman, and a well-educated,well-mannered, even eloquent
terrorist, in the name of Islam, calmly quoted from the Koran and
performed his prayers in the midst of hijacking a plane. His Arab
accomplices, toting high-caliber machinery and displaying paranoid,
psychotic behavior, made my insides churn, particularly when my son
exclaimed, "Are these Muslims?!" We were watching the new Warner Bros.
release "Executive Decision," about terrorists who steal bombs and
hijack a plane to destroy the United States.
My son felt more emotion as he watched the main villain in the movie
bowing in prostration. "Why would a terrorist be praying?" he muttered.
The same question resounded in my mind as we watched the prayer
prostrations we associate with the security and comfort of our Islamic
faith become the symbolic embodiment of terror. This was clearly another
one in a string of movies depicting Islam as the enemy. But what was
particularly traumatizing about this movie was that it associated
mainstream Islamic practices with terrorism.
It is exactly this juxtaposition, that of fanatic terrorist activity
alongside mainstream Muslim practices such as prayer, reading from the
Koran, the Holy Book of Islam, and speaking the Arabic language, that
defiles Islam and Muslims. A similar analogy would be a scene featuring
Yigal Amir reading from the Torah, rocking back and forth in prayer, and
then proceeding to assassinate Yitzhak Rabin. The difference is that
filmmakers would think twice before drawing that hideous connection and
would show more responsibility in portraying Amir as an outlier rather
than a representative of mainstream Judaism. That responsible treatment
was not afforded to Muslims in this film.
As a convert to Islam, I find the treatment of Islam, Muslims and Arabs
in this movie and others like it ("True Lies," "Not Without My
Daughter") to be extremely offensive, irresponsible and dangerous.
Portraying Muslims in this light only serves to outrage American
Muslims, increase the lack of understanding of a great religion and fuel
the fire of paranoia, racism and distrust against Muslims.
In scene after scene, the movie hammered homethe point that it was the
deranged Muslims against "Us," Us being the rational, non-Arab,
non-Muslim "Us." The contrast was stark. For example, all the
non-Muslims in the movie were either victims or heroes, while every
Muslim was either a criminal or a terrorist. By the end of the movie,
the line separating Muslims and terrorists had been erased. As the crowd
cheered the end of the terrorist threat, I began to feel the enormity of
the ensuing threat against Muslims. Was the crowd cheering the defeat of
the terrorists or of the Muslims? Did they even know the difference?
It would be easy to argue that no religion has gone unscathed in
Hollywood productions, and thus Islam is no exception. However, it is
important to recognize that movies negatively characterizing Islam
cannot be compared with those negatively characterizing other religions
for two important reasons.
First, the United States is arguably a Judeo-Christian society where
Islamic knowledge among the populous is extremely low and perceptions
about Islam extremely impressionable; it is difficult for the American
audience to perceive Muslim extremists as the exception rather than the
rule. Thus it is easy for them to draw the conclusion that all Muslims,
or even most Muslims, possess extremist tendencies or that the Islamic
faith and their people are strange and fanatical.
Secondly, because knowledge of the richness and complexity of Islam
within Hollywood and the media is low, there is no interest in
portraying Islam in the balanced and complex way that it deserves. It is
easy and marketable to portray Islam and Muslims as a simplified,
stereotypical package so that it can wholly and summarily be dismissed
as a fundamentalist phenomenon. "Executive Decision" is a case in point.
And it is clearly wrong.
In this country, my country, where the founding principles consist of
freedom of thought, religion and diversity, I find such portrayals an
affront to my rights as a U.S. citizen and my dignity as a Muslim.

Dr. Sherif Mohammad, an eminent writer-thinker with an academic
background in electrical engineering, is active in preaching and
propagation of Islam and has written extensively on Islamic issues and
contemporary social and political problems affecting humanity at large.
He currently lives in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
Dr. Sherif says in the Introduction (p.4), " ... my concern is, mainly,
the position of women in the three religions as it appears in their
original sources not as practised by their millions of followers in the
world today. Therefore, most of the evidence cited comes from the Quran,
the sayings of Prophet Muhammad, the Bible, the Talmud, and the sayings
of some of the most influential Church Fathers whose views have
contributed immeasurably to defining and shaping Christianity. This
interest in the sources relates to the fact that understanding a certain
religion from the attitudes and the behaviour of some of its nominal
followers is misleading. Many people confuse culture with religion, many
others do not know what their religious books are saying, and many
others do not even care."
This booklet addresses a timely issue concerning the status of women as
documented in the three Abrahamic religions. The status of women in
revealed faiths defined by, among other things, rights, privileges and
responsibilities, is perhaps one of the least understood and most
distorted , yet most talked about issues concerning women - specially
the myths surrounding the status of Muslim women. The booklet is
well-documented with sources of information being drawn and properly
referenced from the holy books of Jews, Christians and Muslims and other
literatures. I am most impressesed by the logic and eloquence expressed
in the writing style of Dr. Sherif Mohammad.
While Dr. Jamal Badawi's women articles give an overall understanding of
women's status in Islam, Sherif's is a comparative analysis of the
Abrahamic religions' views on a whole gamut of issues affecting women.
Together, they anwser the relentless propaganda and onslaught against
Islam in this regard. Specially, Sherif booklet exposes the hypocrisy
and double standard that wrongly scapegoat Islam.
This booklet dispels many misperceptions about women's status as
evidenced in the Qur'an, distinguishes between real Islamic belief and
varied Muslim practices influenced by culture and social customs and
highlights the heterogeneity of Muslim women's status. In view of
widespread misperceptions not only among non-Muslim Westerners but also
among many Muslims in this regard, this booklet should be read by all
conscious people. In dispelling certain myths, the booklet also holds
out the prospect of building up harmonious relations among Muslims and
non-Muslims
This landmark booklet is a must for all who take interest in knowing the
status of women in the three revealed faith and those who would like to
search for the truth themselves.

6. In farewell of Sheikh .............................. from Syed Irfan Ashraf
In farewell of Sheikh Al-Ghazali
from
Syed Irfan Ashraf
In farewell of Sheikh Al-Ghazali: And finally .. the star dropped !
By: Dr. Yusuf Al-Qaradawi - Al-Sharq Al-Awsat - Tuesday 12/3/96
And finally, the brilliant star dropped, the high mountain was
demolished, the flapping flag was folded, the rising sun disappeared,
the horseman- teacher walked away .. and .. Shiekh Al-Ghazaly died !
And finally, the Islamic Ummah lost the signpost of the signposts, the
shiekh of Islam, the leader of expression, and the man of the Quran.
And finally, a pen was sheathed after it has been a sword drawn at the
enemies of Allah, never bent, so many times had it scared the atheists
and the hypocrites. A tongue was shut up after 60 years of echoing the
da'wa to Allah, gathering people in thousands in his court, and
arranging them in rows at his call.
Shiekh Al-Ghazaly died, in the midst of the fight, without throwing away
his weapon, without folding the sail (of the boat). On the contrary, he
kept fighting the waves, and facing the storms which blew from all
directions at the boat of Islam so as to drop it in the deep sea.
News agents announced that he got a heart attack while lecturing on
"Islam and the west" in Riadh. The knight fell with the sword in his
hand ! and I count him among the martyrs by the will of Allah, since he
died while calling to Islam, and was a 'stranger' as well.
I knew that Shiekh Al-Ghazaly had a heart-gall for several years, and
that doctors adviced him firmly not to travel because his health cannot
hold it. But the Shiekh was not able to refuse the call of an Islamic
activity. That's why he traveled few months ago to America representing
the Assembly of Islamic research. And I was surprised when I read last
week that he is in Riadh to participate in the "Islam and west" workshop
although he has previously refused, kindly, several invitations for
lecturing last Ramadan. It seems that Allah glory to Him destined that
the Shiekh travel this time for a fate He has known, and which the
Shiekh loves; it is to be buried near the Prophet (peace be upon him) at
Baqee'. This is the place where he wrote his valuable book
"Fiqhu-seerah", mixing his tears with the ink, in love and affection by
the Prophet (peace be upon him).
I knew the shiekh and imam around half a century ago. I knew in him the
smart mind, the pure heart, the pleasing manner, and the fixed
resolution. I found in Al-Ghazaly nothing but honesty in belief,
correctness in wordings, sincerity in work, guidance in thoughts, purity
in manners, bravery in saying the truth, enmity of vain, steadfastness
in the message, love to good, care about justice, hate to transgression,
support to the weak, and fighting the proud ones, regardless what force
they have.
I knew in him a man who lives for Islam, and Islam alone. Islam is his
flesh and bones, his day and night, and his start and end. He lived as a
guardian of the castle of Islam. Whenever an enemy approaches it to
penetrate in, he used to shout at his loudest voice, to wake up the
sleepy and warn the inadvertent. I think he was so, and Allah is the
Accounting One for him.
You may have a different opinion than his in one or more issue, and you
may criticize him for some of his opinions, but you cannot doubt his
honesty and sincerity. In any case, he has his "ijtihaad" in
understanding his religion, and in serving it the best way he thinks.
So, if he is right, he has two rewards, and if he is wrong, he has one.
Shiekh Al-Ghazaly left obvious fingerprints on the Islamic mind, not to
be erased by the difference of day and night: tens of books, hundreds of
essays, thousands of khutab, lectures, and sessions, and a countless
number of speeches in radio and TV. He also had many students who
learned from him in the different universities he worked in; al-Azhar in
Egypt, Um-ulqura in Mecca, the faculty of Shari'a in Qatar, and Price
Abdel-Aziz University in Algeria.
The Shiekh has taught his students the balance between mind and
narrations, between fundamentals and branches, and between religion and
this wordly life. He has never obeyed those who want to abrogate texts
in the name of benefits, nor those who want to refuse narrations in the
name of thoughts, nor those who want to ignite a fight between Islam and
development. He used to tell those who want Islam to "develop": Why
don't you ask "development" to be a Muslim ?
Some people may refuse some of the Shiekh's opinions, just because it is
not according to their desires. However, what I know is that Shiekh
Al-Ghazaly's opinions never went away from the confirmed "ijma'"
(consensus) of the Ummah. I detailed that in a book I have written on
him recently ...
I knew Shiekh Al-Ghazaly from a short distance in "al-Toor" jail (in
Egypt). I also knew him after the period of jail, lived with him, and
accompanied him in travel and residence. I found the Shiekh, who is so
hard in his debates, like thunder, like a lion, like a fighter ... , I
found him - from a short distance - a human being with; a heart full of
sympathy, a near tear, a pure inside, a clear spirit, a sweet company, a
kind manner, a smiley face, an easy going, a sweet talk, a fast humor,
simple, humble, soft, and away from show- off, complications and false
claims. He used to cry quickly when he see or hear a human (affecting)
scene. He used to shake in submission and affection when he remembers
Allah and the hereafter. He was never proud to learn, even from his own
students ...
The late Shiekh lived all his life with a free thought and a free tongue
and pen. He never worshiped anyone but Allah, and never sold his pen to
any creature whatsoever. So many times did the people of power try to
buy him ! However, they couldn't afford his price; how can one buy a man
who wants Allah and paradise ? So many times did they wave titles at his
face - the titles which many of the servants of this world would flow
their saliva at - but the Shiekh never surrendered to a promise or a
threat ...
I have authored a book on our Shiekh Al-Ghazaly as I knew him ... I
don't know whether the Shiekh has seen it after it was published or not
? It is part of my duty towards the Shiekh, as one of those who
benefited from his knowledge and obtained from his light ...
I hope that Allah guide some of our sons in the da'wa departments and
others to study the Shiekh's different contributions, as due to his
scientific, da'wa and reform status ...
The Shiekh's fate was to fight in two vast fronts: The first one is the
enemies of Islam who want it in a bad shape, and hate the spread of its
lights and its return to lead life once again ... The second front is
the ignorant friends of Islam, those who harm Islam badly while they are
trying to benefit it ... The Shiekh called them "the mis-guiding
inviters" ...
Some youth succeeded in turning the Islamic-teachings-tree upside down.
So, they considered the light branches stems or roots, and they
considered the important fundamentals leafs which fall with winds ! ...
That's what scared the Imam and Shiekh, and made him concerned about the
future of the Ummah. He said, may Allah bless him: "I was fearful for
the future of our Ummah when I found some of those who are busy with
Hadith science lack 'fiqh', and they are turning to be people of fiqh,
and then, people of political methodology which aims at changing the
society and state. The most surprising thing which disgraces this mean
religious thought is that it knows nothing about the constitutions of
governing, the fight among society levels, the youth problems, the
family crises, and educating good manners. Then, it knows nothing about
using civil life and society evolution for serving the high objectives
which Islam came with. Sick minds know nothing but trivial problems, for
them they become angry, and according to them, they take friends and
enemies ... " ...
Our beloved Shiekh, the Ummah has lost you while it is in a bad need of
you. The Ummah has lost you while the fight between Islam and its
enemies are at its peak. Enemies are coming from above and from below,
eyes grew wild and hearts reached to the throats, and people are
imagining vain thoughts concerning Allah, "There were the believers
sorely tried, and shaken with a mighty shock."
We were in need of your swordly pen, or your penly sword, to fight in
defend of the truth from vain, in defend of belief from disbelief, in
defend of Islam which is now besieged by the international jewdism, the
western zionism, and the eastern idolism ...
They want no firebrand for jihad, no candle for da'wa, no voice for the
awakening. But we have learned from you that the work of Allah is
stronger and faster than theirs ...
Our beloved Shiekh, I can't find words at your level of eloquence to say
in your farewell. All what I say is: The eye is crying and the heart is
sad, but we will say nothing but what pleases our Lord; Inna lillahi wa
inna ilayehi raje'oon !

Assalamo-Alaikum. I fully agree with the brothers who say we should not
humiliate ourselves by pleading to Warner. Going for help to this system
means that we consider this system as just and right, which is far, far
from the truth. The option of going to Muslim governments is open and we
must try that, even though those are Muslim governements only in name.
But most of all, we should probably not worry about these petty things
any way. It is like the barking of dogs which does not bother the
elephants a bit.
Remember: our weakness is among us, and is not attributable to the
strength and unity of Kuffar. Rather, our weakness is attributable to
our not being the loyal slaves of Allah as He likes us to be. Also: when
you enter in a dark room, no amount of shouting or running around is
going to remove the darkness; however, if you just light a little light,
some of the darkness will go away. Alhamdillah in this country there are
many many flickers of light. Let us try and support those. Rest will
come by itself. Wassalam-o-Alaikum. FARID MIDHET.
