                             Thirteen Blessed Days

                              Muhammad al-Jibaly

                         Bismillah ir-Rahmaan ir-Raheem

With Allah's bounty, we are at the doors of very blessed days for both the
hajeej (pilgrims) and the residents. So we should know the Sunnah regarding
these days in order to make the best out of them.

I.The First Ten Days of Dthul-Hijjah:
-------------------------------------

1. Ibn Abbas (R) reported that the Messenger (S) said: "There are no other days
on which good deeds are more beloved to Allah than on these (Ten) Days" He was
asked: "Not even Jihaad in Allah's way?" He replied: "Not even Jihaad in
Allah's way; except for a person who went out (for Jihaad) with his self and
wealth and came back with none (i.e., lost all for Allah)." [Al-Bukhaaree, ...]

2. Ibn Umar (R) reported that the Messenger (S) said: "There are no other days
that are greater before Allah (T), or that good deeds are more beloved to Him
in them, than these Ten Days, so say in plenty Tahleel (laa ilaaha illa
'Llaah), Takbeer (Allahu Akbar), and Tahmeed (al-Hamdu lillaah)." [Ahamd &
at-Tabarani; authentic]

3. In Tafseer of the aayah {And to mention and remember Allah's Name
[plentifully] on known days} [al-Hajj 28], Ibn Abbas said: "These are the Ten
Days." [Ibn Katheer]

4. Ibn Umar and Abu Hurairah used to go out to the market places on the Ten
Days making Takbeer. And people used to say Takbeer too based on their action.
[al-Bukhaaree].

5. Hafsah (R) said: "There are four acts that the Messenger of Allah (S) never
stopped to do: Fasting on Aashooraa, on the Ten Days, and three days of every
month, and to pray two rak'aat before the morning prayer." [Ahmad &
an-Nasaa'ee; authentic]

6. One of the wives of the Prophet (S) said: "Allah's Messenger (S) used to
fast the (first) nine days of Dthil Hijjah, the Day of 'Aashooraa', and three
days of each month." [Sahih Abi Dawud by al-Albaani]

7. Fasting on all these days, however, is not a waajib or a sunnah that the
Messenger (S) was striclty constant in it. Aaishah (R) said: "I never saw the
Messenger (S) fasting the Ten Days." [Muslim]

8. It is reported that once the Ten Days started, Sa'eed bin Jubair used to
exert very excessively (in worshiping Allah) that it was almost beyond his
capability.

II. The Day of 'Arafah:
-----------------------

1. Abu Qatadah reported that the Messenger (S) said: "Fasting the Day of
'Arafah expiates the sins of two years: past one and coming one. And fasting
the Day of 'Aashooraa' expiates the sins of the past year." [Muslim, ...]

2. Aaishah (R) reported that the Messenger (S) said: "There is no day on which
Allah (T) frees people from the Fire as He does on the Day of 'Arafah. He comes
close and then He boasts to His angels: 'What are these people seeking?'"
[Muslim, an-Nasaa'ee, Ibn Maajah]

III. The Ruling of the Udhiyah (Sacrifice):
-------------------------------------------

1. Suurat ul-Kawthar ((... For Your Lord Pray and offer Sacrifice ...))

2. ((Say: my salaah, sacrifice, life, and death are for Allah the Lord of the
peoples. He has no Partners, with this I have been commanded, and I am the
first of the believers.)) [al-An`aam 6:162-163]

3. Abu Hurairah (R) reported that the Messenger (S) said: "He who has the
capacity but chooses not to sacrifice may not approach our prayer place (on
Eed)." [Ibn Maajah, Ahmad, ..; authentic]

4. Anas reported that the Messenger (S) said: "He who slaughtered before the
prayer (of Eed) has only slaughtered for himself. But the one who did it after
the prayer has indeed completed his sacrifice and conformed with the Sunnah of
the Muslims." [Al-Bukhaaree]

5. Al-Baraa' reported that the Messenger (S) said: "The first thing that we do
on this day (al-Adhaa) is to pray. Then we go back and slaughter. The one who
does this has indeed complied with our Sunnah, but the one who slaughtered
earlier had only gotten some (regular) meat for his household, which does not
count as sacrifice in the least." [Al-Bukharee & Muslim]

6. The one who cannot afford to sacrifice has been covered by the Messenger (S)
who sacrificed for those who did not sacrifice in his Ummah, as was reported by
Jaabir. [abu Dawud, at-Tirmidthi, ...; authentic:Irwa ul-ghaleel]

IV. Some Sunan and Regulations:
-------------------------------

1. Umm Salamah (R) reported that the Messenger (S) said: "The one who has a
slaughtering to slaughter (on Eed) then, once the hilaal of Dthil Hijjah is
observed, he should not cut any of his hair or nails until he sacrifices."
[Muslim, ...]

2. Anas (R) reported that the Messenger of Allah (S) sacrificed two rams of
beautiful (dark) eyes and large horns. He slaughtered them himself, putting his
foot on the side of the kneck, and saying: "Bismillah, wallahu Akbar."
[Al-Bukharee and Muslim.]

3. Aaishah (R) reported that the Messenger (S) said to her: "Give me the
knife." Then he said: "Sharpen it against a stone." Then He took it, laid down
the ram, and slaughtered it saying: "Bismillaah. O Allah, accept from Muhammad,
Muhammad's family, and Muhammad's Ummah." And thus he sacrificed it.

4. The Messenger (S) first prohibited saving any of the Sacrifice's meat, to
benefit poor people. Then permitted it saying: "Eat (from the meat), save, and
give as Sadagqh." [Al-Bukharee & Muslim]

5. It can be done on any of the three days (Days of Tashreeq) following the
Eed. Jubair bin Mut'im (R) reported that the Messenger (S) said: "All the
Days of Tashreeq are slaughtering days." [Ahmad, Ibn Hibban, etc. Good in its
collective chains of narrators]

6. Ibn Umar said: "The days of slaughtering are the day of adhaa and the two
days following it." [Al-Muwatta'; Authentic]

V. The Three Days of Tashreeq:
------------------------------

1.'Uqbah bin Aamir said the the Messenger (S) said: "The day of 'Arafah, the day
of slaughtering, and the days of Tashreeq are our Eed - Muslim people. They are
days of eating and drinking." [Abu Dawud; authentic]

2. 'Amr bin al-'Aas said: "These days (the Days of Tashreeq) are the days that
the Messenger (S) used to order us to eat on them and to prohibit us from
fasting them." [Abu Dawud; authentic]

3. Nuhaishah al-Hudthali said that the Messenger (S) said: "The Days of
Tashreeq are days of eating, drinking, and mentioning Allah." [Muslim, Ahmad]

4. Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet (S) said: "The Days of Minaa are days
of eating and drinking." [At-Tahaawi & Ahmad; as-Saheehah 1282 by al-Albaani]

Wa Salla 'Llaahu 'alaa Muhammad.

Dear brother/sister:

Assalamualaikum!

Hope all of you have enjoyed the blessed month of Ramadan and Eidul Fitr.
Now by the Grace of Allah (SWT) we are approaching another blessed month,
the month of Eidul 'adha and are ready to fulfill another commandment of
Allah (SWT) of performing Zabeeha Qurbani. IMRC started Zabeeha Qurbani
program in 1993 and performed 214 Zabeeha Qurbani on behalf of brothers
and sisters. In 1994, number of Zabeeha Qurabanis increased to 495 and
almost doubled to 910 in the year 1995. This year, we are hoping to see
a continuation in increased participation which will benefit more poor
families in India. Please send your contributions ($50 per head) for
Zabeeha Qurbani along with names by the 23rd of April 1996. Also, please
inform your friends about IMRC Zabeeha Qurbani program.

May Allah Bless you.

Chairman, IMRC

News from India:
----------------

The President of the Kashmir Commission of Jurists, Mr Jalil Andrabi,
was found dead on the 24th of March. His body was found floating in the
Jhelum river. Mr Andrabi had been missing since the 8th of March.

The APHC and the family of Mr Andrabi have accused the Indian govt.
of killing the noted Kashmiri lawyer, who represented the people at the UN
and other international forums, and exposed human rights abuses by the Indian
army in the war torn state.

The chief of the JKLF (Amaanullah), Mr Shabir Siddiqui and his military
commander, Basharat Raza, was killed along with 34 other militants in
three days of fighting around the Hazratbal Mosque. The killings
indicated that the Indian army was hardening its stance, as it killed Mr
Siddiqui and 21 other militants after promising them safe passage.

Arif Beg, one of the few muslims in the BJP, quit the party after being
denied a ticket to contest the latest elections. He called the rightwing
party racist, as it had not fielded a single muslim candidate.

------------
IMRC Update
------------

Entire Fitra amount (Rs. 300,000) received during the month of Ramadan
was distributed among the poor Muslim families in 14 states of India
before Eidul Fitr.

4,000 Muslims were provided with meals during the holy month of Ramadan

The response to the Clothe-a-Child program was discouraging. This year we
received donations for only 700 children as compared to 5000 last year.
These children are very poor and are studying in IMRC supported village
schools. We need to continue this program of providing new clothes to
these children once a year. Therefore please donate $10 to help
Clothe-a-Child.

Subject: question about Islam
Date: Mon, 15 Apr 1996 16:12:16 -0500 (EST)

Assalamaualaikum:

I was told that this was an e-mail address where one could send
questions about Islam. I have a few questions regarding what Islam
says about the nature of deeds both good and bad deeds. Some time ago
another muslim and I were talking about if whether one gets rewarded
for a good deed if bad ways were taken to achieve it. For example,
suppose a politician is running for office and lies and cheats his
way to win the election. Suppose afterwards, in his new capacity of
power, he does good deeds. Will he get rewarded for those good deeds
even though he was only able to do them by way of bad deeds? The bad
deeds got him into a position whereby he could do certain good. So
the general question is does Allah reward deeds individually or is
consideration taken into how the person was able to get into a
position to do good deeds? I hope these questions make sense. If not
please contact me. I would really like to know the answers.

May Allah reward you for your time and effort.

Wassalam

as-Salaam alaykum

FYI

Jim Morin, the syndicated editorial cartoonist for The Miami
Herald newspaper recently distributed a cartoon showing two
ape-like figures carrying clubs; one with the face of Fidel
Castro, the other with the head of a beared man wearing a
turban. The word "ISLAM" is written on the turban.

The headline of the cartoon reads "FIDEL AND INFIDEL..."

The Castro-like figure says, "We blow unarmed civilian
aircraft out of the sky with Mig jet fighters..."

The "ISLAM" figure says, "Big deal! We bomb innocent women
and children to smithereens!!"

AMERICAN MUSLIMS ASKED TO PROTEST MASSACRE OF CIVILIANS IN
LEBANON

(WASHINGTON, DC - April 18, 1996) - News reports indicate
that more than 100 Lebanese civilians have been killed in an
Israeli attack on refugees who sought shelter with U.N.
peacekeepers. Many more people were wounded in the
attack. This massacre is just the latest in a series of
deaths resulting from Israel's indiscriminate attacks on
civilian areas throughout Lebanon. These attacks were all
carried out using American-supplied helicopters, planes,
bombs, and missiles.

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUESTED: (Please announce at Friday
prayers.)

1) JOIN PROTESTS in your area. Coalitions of Muslim,
Arab-American and civil rights organizations have scheduled
protests in Washington, D.C., and New York City. In
Washington, the protest will take place on Sunday, April

21, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. outside the White House. In New
York, the protest will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday,
April 19, in front of the United Nations building.

2) ORGANIZE A PROTEST in your area. Call CAIR for tips on
holding a local protest.

3) SEND LETTERS TO THE EDITOR of your local newspapers.
Demand that the Israeli attacks on civilians be halted
immediately. Ask why the American government condemns all
attacks on civilians, except when those attacks kill Muslims
and Arabs. Ask why American taxpayers should pay for the
weapons Israel uses to massacre civilians.

4) CONTACT YOUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES to protest their
lack of action on this issue. Call the U.S. Capitol
Switchboard at 202-224-3121 to find out the name and phone
number of the representatives from your area.

5) DONATE FUNDS to American Muslim organizations doing
relief work in Lebanon.

UNCONSTITUTIONAL PROVISIONS INCLUDED IN ANTI-TERRORISM
LEGISLATION

President Clinton is about to sign anti-terrorism
legislation that could negatively impact LEGAL activities by
a variety of religious, ethnic and civil rights
organizations. According to the American Civil Liberties
Union
(ACLU), the bill (H.R.2703 and S.735) would require: "Banks
to freeze the assets of any domestic organization or U.S.
citizen the bank believes is an agent of a designated
foreign terrorist organization. A bank would be required to
freeze the assets even if the organization or individual was
not designated a 'terrorist organization.' The bill includes
no mechanism for the domestic organization to appeal the
bank's determination to freeze its assets." No definition of
"agent" is offered in the bill.

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUESTED:
1) CALL PRESIDENT CLINTON to ask that he not sign the
legislation. Call the White House at 202-456-1414, or fax
202-456-2461.

CAIR REPRESENTATIVE TO ATTEND OKLAHOMA CITY EVENT

CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad has been invited to
attend the event marking the one-year anniversary of the
April 19, 1995, attack on the Murrah Federal Building in
Oklahoma City. Awad will point out that Muslims and
Arab-Americans were also victims of the attack. CAIR
recorded more than 200 anti-Muslim incidents, including one
death, in the days following the bombing.

ISNA joins the American Egyptian Council (AEC) in condemning the attack by
terrorists against Greek Tourists in Cairo.

Plainfield, IN., The Islamic Society of North America joins AEC in strongly
condemning the killings of 17 Greek tourists and an Egyptian, and injuring
fifteen others by four gunmen outside a Cairo Hotel on April 18, 1996.

It is our positions that this act of terrorism is heinous crime that fully
deserves severe punishment by law irrespective of the political and/or
religious professions o fits perpetrators. Although at present no group has
claimed responsibility, ISNA wishes to disassociate such acts of cowardice
with the practice of Islam which calls for respect, understanding and
cooperation amongst people. Islam beseeches all of humanity to tolerance
and mercy toward its fellow beings and condemn the killing of innocent
people. ISNA sends its deppest condolences to the families of the victims.
ISNA would like to see an end to such vicious circle of violence and
terrorism that is occuring in Egypt today, and to restore peach and freedom
to Egypt by ending current provocative measures against members of the
political opposition and by freeing all political prisoners.

        *********************************************************

ISNA Condemns Israel's ongoing attacks on innocent civilians and refugees
in Northern Lebanon which have killed over 72 civilians and driven tens of
thousands from their homes. With indiscriminate shelling of ambulances,
residential neighborhoods and UN refugee camps, the Israeli Government has
perpetrated war crimes. If Israel wishes an end to violence, it must
withdraw immediately in accordance with the UN Resolution # 425.
