----------- Original message below forwarded by NETTRAIN moderator ------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1993 23:13:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Irving Wiswall <irvw@LINFIELD.EDU> Regarding keeping impact of ftp to a minimum: In addition to suggestions already made, don't forget that the size of the file is the biggest factor in the impact of the transfer on a site. Especially with beginning sessions there's no need to get binary files. Get small text files like READMEs and the resource drain will be minimal. -Irv Wiswall irvw@linfield.edu ----------- Original message below forwarded by NETTRAIN moderator ------------ Date: Sat, 30 Jan 1993 01:47:51 -0800 (PST) From: Genny Engel <gen@magnum.ucop.edu> > > But I do also have one specific problem. I don't have all the time zones memorized, but I'd bet you could find several appropriate FTP sites in Australia, New Zealand, etc. that would be off THEIR prime time hours during YOUR prime time hours. Another approach is to have each trainee FTP to a different site and get the README file, which is generally about the shortest file at the site. Genny Engel gen@magnum.ucop.edu
