Today I posted the January Gutenberg Newsletter from Michael Hart, the very prolific director of Project Gutenberg. Mr. Hart has objected in numerous personal notes to my because of my choosing not to post some of his earlier messages. I have chosen not to post these messages because their cnnection to the topic of NETTRAIN was minimal at best--for instance, Mr. Hart cites the announcement of the availability of Jean Armour Polly's excellent "Surfing the Internet" (which is also available from many other sources, as previously announced on NETTRAIN. Mr. Hart complains that I rejected that particular posting without reading it carefully. I admit: when faced with another one of Mr. Hart's 400-line epistles, my first reaction is to hit the DELETE key. I certainly did not feel that it was in the best interests of NETTRAIN to post these always lengthy messages because Mr. Hart includes one or two Internet training documents in his listings. I have tried to accommodate Mr. Hart, but I have received complaints from NETTRAIN subscribers about his postings. However, I must seriously object to his cavalier volunteering of my mailbox for letters of support for Mr. Hart (I noticed that he did not ask NETTRAIN subscribers to send me complaints about his postings). I feel that this was an abuse of the medium, and ethically questionable. The bottom line, however, is that I want to resolve this issue once and for all. Therefore, at the risk of starting another flamefest, I would like to ask that anyone who wishes to express an opinion on the appropriateness for NETTRAIN of Mr. Hart's Gutenberg Project postings do NOT e-mail me personally, but rather post here on NETTRAIN for an open discussion of the matter. I refuse to deal with a large number of private postings which would only leave me open to charges of unfairness--I want everybody to hear that people have to say about this. The relevant section of Mr. Hart's posting follows: >Special note to NETTRAIN users of Project Gutenberg: moderator >started Jan. 1. . .our first January posting announcing Surfing >the Internet by Jean Armour Polly was rejected by Jim Milles as >irrlelvant to NETTRAIN. . .without even reading the first lines >announcing this highly relevant etext.
