30th Annual Clinic on Library Applications of Data Processing
Graduate School of Library and Information Science
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
April 4-6, 1993
Urbana, Illinois
Emerging Communities:
Integrating Networked Information into Library Services
Wide area computer networks, such as those comprising the Internet, are
providing libraries with access to a growing array of information resources.
They are also opening new channels for communication both within and beyond
organizational boundaries, encouraging librarians to participate in the
development of new electronic communities with colleagues and patrons.
Electronic information resources and communication networks may facilitate,
even transform, many aspects of library work, but a number of problems and
issues also exist, making the transition far from easy. "Emerging
Communities: Integrating Networked Information into Library Services" will
provide an opportunity for information professionals from a wide variety of
settings to discuss their experiences and concerns in the informal
educational setting long associated with the Data Processing Clinics. Over
twenty-five speakers will share their research results, expertise, and
insights. Conference topics include:
o The use of computer networks in various types of libraries libraries to
accomplish institutional goals, provide traditional and new services, and
communicate with peers and users;
o Networked communities and implications for librarians;
o Legal, economic, and policy issues related to the electronic dissemination
of information;
o Bibliographic control of networked information; and
o New roles for information professionals in the networked environment.
In addition, pre-conference workshops will allow participants to explore
several aspects of networking in depth. George H. Brett and Greg Newby will
provide a hands-on introduction to the basics of Internet use. Tracy LaQuey
Parker and Philip Doty will discuss options and procedures for obtaining an
Internet connection. Anne G. Lipow will present principles and techniques for
training staff and end-users in network use. Finally, a workshop led by F.W.
Lancaster will provide attendees with an opportunity to learn more about
methods for assessing networking needs and impacts.
The conference will also include an evening of informal demonstrations of
network tools and resources by conference participants; personal computers
connected to the Internet will be made available to attendees who wish to
demonstrate relevant systems and services from their own institutions or in
particular areas of interest. Another special feature will be the "Meet the
Authors" continental breakfast. Tracy LaQuey Parker, Ed Krol, and Anne G.
Lipow--authors of popular new Internet guides--will be on hand.
Who should attend?
Anyone who wants to learn more about the use of computer networks in
information environments will find the conference of interest. Workshops and
presentations have been designed specifically for librarians, library
administrators, and systems librarians in all types of libraries and
information centers; network administrators, user support staff, and others
involved in planning for network implementation and use. Library school
faculty and students will also benefit from attending the conference.
Conference Support:
An electronic network version of the conference proceedings will be made
available by The Coalition for Networked Information. The following are
conference contributors:
CICNet
Data Research Associates
Institute of Government and Public Affairs, University of Illinois

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS
SUNDAY, APRIL 4, 1993
8:30 am-noon Pre-conference Workshop I: Training Network Users
(Anne G. Lipow: Director - Library Solutions Institute)
This workshop will be devoted to theoretical and practical aspects of
offering network training, including: recognizing the obligation to teach
staff as well as patrons, setting objectives for network training, principles
and techniques of instruction, and planning specific programs. Participants
will be guided in preparing an instructional plan for their own environments.
Each participant should bring copies of training materials they are
developing or have used. Participants will receive a workbook supporting the
workshop agenda.
9:00 am-noon Pre-conference Workshop II: Internet Basics
(Greg Newby: Assistant Professor - Graduate School of
Library and Information Science, University of Illinois
and George H. Brett II: Manager - Clearinghouse for
Networked Information Discovery and Retrieval, MCNC
Center for Communications). Illini Hall.
This workshop will offer participants an explanation and demonstration of
basic Internet activities, such as electronic mail, anonymous ftp, and
electronic journal and bulletin board use. Various navigation tools
currently in use that are particularly relevant to libraries' needs, such as
Gopher, Archie, and WAIS, will also be demonstrated. Attendees will gain
hands-on, guided practice in using the Internet, with individual assistance.
Instructional handouts will be distributed.
1:30-4:30 pm Pre-conference Workshop III: Getting Connected
(Tracy LaQuey Parker: Education Marketing Development
Manager - Cisco Systems and Philip Doty: Assistant
Professor - Graduate School of Library and Information
Science, University of Texas at Austin)
The purpose of this workshop is to provide an overview of the process of
obtaining an Internet connection. Attendees will be introduced to the
options offered by various vendors and presented with information on how to
evaluate needs and costs related to various services, what technology is
required, and how to negotiate with vendors. Participants will have the
opportunity to discuss their particular situations and problems and to seek
solutions, with the help of the facilitators and other attendees. This
workshop is intended to assist librarians who do not yet have a network
connection and who need help in understanding the options and implications.
1:30-4:30 pm Pre-conference Workshop IV: Assessing Networking Needs
and Impacts (F.W. Lancaster: Professor - Graduate School
of Library and Information Science, University of
Illinois, with participation of selected conference
speakers)
This workshop will introduce participants to goals and methods associated
with evaluating networking needs and impacts. An overview of evaluation
purposes and techniques related to library and information services will be
provided. In addition, an expert panel of researchers and librarians who
have conducted various kinds of assessments related to computer networking
will be on hand to share their expertise. The workshop is intended to
provide participants with some assistance in implementing their own
assessments of networking needs and impacts.
