Jan Alexander and Marsha Tate of Wolgram Memorial Library, Widener University
 have
a very nice site on using the Web for research. One of their modules has to do
specifically with the kinds of information one might turn to the Web for. They
suggest that if you are looking for current information (news, etc.), government
information, technical (computer) information, education sites, popular subjects
(hobbies/recreation) the Web may be a good resource. Their "rule of thumb" is
 that
if someone is making money publishing information, it is not likely they will
 give
it away for free on the Net. (This does not mean, however, that the same
information can be found for free on the Web, put up by someone else; this
constantly happens with government information.

The address of Alexander and Tate's site A Modular Approach to Teaching/Learning
the World Wide Web is: http://www.science.widener.edu/~withers/pyramid.htm

The section that deals with what one can reasonably expect to find on the Web
"Using the Web for Research" is:

http://www.science.widener.edu/~withers/WEBRES/goals2.htm
