Library in the computer related area implies: (1) A collection of programs or data files. (2) A set of ready-made software routines (functions, calls, subroutines or other data) for programmers. (3) A storage device that handles multiple units of media and provides one or more drives for reading and writing them. (4) A named area on a disk that can contain programs and related information (not files). (5) The set of publications for a product. Digital in relation to computers implies the 0s and 1s of data. I'd change your definition of digital library to a collection of digitized material created primarily from printed material (could also include photos and other types of documents). See http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/R+D/ I see the term Electronic Library being closely associated with Libraries in general. Closer to an electronic form of the public library. Most "electronic libraries" are in fact attempts at changing the way we view public libraries. See: http://mel.lib.mi.us/main-index.html http://library.uwaterloo.ca/, http://history.cc.ukans.edu/carrie/carrie_main.html http://link.tsl.texas.gov/ Your term for web-based libraries gets my vote. -- Gerry Boyd -- gboyd@netcom.com
