Promoting Non-Profits On The Internet
http://www.internetday.com/archives/102098.html
The internet has become extremely commercial. With so many people
looking solely to increase profits, there is little information out
there for non-profit companies looking to create a web presence or
for the opportunity web designers and marketers have to help promote
non-profits.
In general, non-profits are organizations providing charity to those
in need, although sometimes they are providing a service that might
not be financially achievable in the marketplace normally (like fine
arts or specialized educational resources).
If you are a web designer, partnering up and donating your time to a
non-profit organization and working on their website will create
goodwill between you and the community at large, not to mention help
your portfolio of websites. Your connections through the non-profit
organization may create new business for you as well.
Non-profits are usually looking for donations and for volunteers.
Both of these aims can be achieved in part through an internet
presence. If the non profit can accept donations via credit card,
then a secured site can be created where people are able to donate at
home over the web, saving the non-profit valuable money in postage
and mailings. And a continuously updated form showing areas where
volunteers are needed can be very helpful to people involved in the
organization, because they can then determine how they can best fill
their needs.
Consider the goal of the non-profit organization, then determine how
their mission can be aided by the internet. Design a site that
matches that mission. Provide information regarding projects the
non-profit is undertaking, and how the viewer can help the non-profit
achieve those results: a monetary donation? a donation of time? how
about a non-monetary material or service donation? All of these
donations help the non-profit achieve its mission.
If you are a novice web designer, perhaps you can start by looking
at your church, and see if they would like to have an internet
presence or if you can help with their current site. Securing space
is a simple and inexpensive process, whether the church pays for
their site or you do. There are a number of things you can do on the
site then to continue to generate traffic ... post up the sermon
encoded in RealAudio, or provide a devotion of the day. Your church
may find the internet a wonderful place for a ministry.
Perhaps your company's mission is compatible with that of a
non-profit organization. If so, check with your state regarding
applying for non-profit status before you check with the Federal
government.
Sometimes the greatest rewards come from serving the community
rather than growing the bottom line.

The sudden death of Jon Postel, the central administrator of
Internet addresses for as long as the Net has been in existence,
appears to have only slightly disrupted the U.S. government's plans
to transfer its authority for Internet governance to a new private
administrative corporation - even though Postel played a direct role
in the process of creating the new body.
