Generate does not generate

Dear all,
I have been attempting to generate a bibliography from a
manuscript file (which contains about a dozen files, some fairly long
-- 90 to 100k). Using the method on p. 586 of the BBB (using
the `complete' option on the menu' produced, after `building
template', `generating', and the usual clicks and hums, `Error
extracting index/biblio.'. Using the `Ibid bibliography'
option from the same menu produced the same activities, followed by
`done' (oh goody, thought I), followed by a total freeze. Using the
`Fragment' option produced the same `error extracting' message.
Checking the files in the Biblio subdir. I found two: nbibid.ext
(not the filename I had asked for) and nbibid@.hdr. NBibid.ext
contained a list of bibliographical citations. Using the Ibid menu
"Generate" option, and choosing Chicago B (as usual) produced more
whirring and clicking and a `Done' message, but all I got was the
heading "Bibliography" and a lot of formatting codes -- no text.
I seem to recall people having reported similar problems before,
but I can't remember what the solution was (if any). (I might add
that I ran `maintain' on the ibid. db after it had already reindexed
itself when I called up Ibid. intending to ask it to reindex itself.)
Any enlightenment here? Should I run Update (again?) to see if that
sorts things? I should add that (as usual) this is a matter of some
urgency.
Happy Easter, Pesach, Adha, or simply long weekend to all!
