Royalty in the News
Japan's Princess Sayako, also known as Norinomiya, turned thirty on April 18.
In spite of increasing pressure on the princess to marry and move out of the
Imperial Palace, Sayako remains single. Marriage would result in loss of her
title, her rooms at the palace and her place in the family register.
King Abdullah of Jordan is on a multi-nation tour designed to improve ties
with Arabs and economic reforms for Jordan. His tour will include Egypt,
Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Syria, Libya, Qatar and Kuwait.
Princess Juliana, the mother of Holland's Queen Beatrix, celebrated her
ninetieth birthday on April 30. While thousands of Dutch citizens took to the
streets and painted the town orange in honor of the House of Orange, Juliana
spent the day quietly with her family.
Prince Konstantine Alexios of Greece, the infant son of Crown Prince and
Princess Pavlos, was christened in London on April 15. Royals from Sweden,
Greece, Spain, Denmark, Yugoslavia and Monaco were present as Prince William
of Great Britain became a godparent for the first time.

Question of the Month
Last month we asked, "In spite of DNA evidence indicating that Anna Anderson
was NOT Anastasia, the granddaughter of Tsar Alexander III of Russia, many
people still are not convinced that she was a fraud. Do you think Anna
Anderson was Anastasia?" Of the 55 replies received, 21 believe that Anna
Anderson was Anastasia, while 34 do not feel that she was one of the
daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra.
Next month, Prince Edward will marry Sophie Rhys-Jones at Windsor Castle. The
May Question of the Month is: "Do you think that Prince Edward's brother,
Prince Charles, will one day walk down the aisle with Camilla Parker-Bowles?"

Ferdinand & Isabella
by: HRHConnie
The marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella enabled Spain to become a united
country after seven centuries of war and anarchy. Isabella was more skilled
in matters of statesmanship, while Ferdinand's talents were in the area of
warfare. Combining their skills enabled their reign to be very effective.
Isabella was born on April 22, 1451, the daughter of John II, King of
Castile. She was a descendant of John of Gaunt, third son of Edward III of
England. The son of the King of Aragon, also called John II, Ferdinand was
born on March 10, 1452. He became the heir to the throne at age ten upon the
death of his older brother.
The two kingdoms of Castile and Aragon make up Spain as we know it today.
Castile was much larger, more important and powerful. While many princes of
Europe vied for her hand, Isabella chose her cousin Ferdinand of Aragon, with
the specific intent to unite Spain into one kingdom. The marriage articles
signed in 1469 established Ferdinand as the junior partner in this union.
Upon Henry IV's death in 1474, Isabella ascended the throne of Castile.
The most distinguishing features of this strong Catholic monarchy include
Isabella's independence of Rome, her restriction of the secular power and
influence of the Church in Spain, the financing of Christopher Columbus'
westward journey and the setting up of her own Inquisition independent of the
Papacy. Isabella set up the Spanish Inquisition in 1478 to deal with the
Jews, who had been considered enemies of Christianity for centuries. Later
the Inquisition turned its attention to Protestants in an attempt to further
rid the nation of spiritual ills.
Two of Isabella and Ferdinand's children entered into marriages that had
important political and dynastic effects in Europe. The Infanta Dona
Catalina, known in English history of Catherine of Aragon, became the wife of
Henry VIII, whom he divorced in order to marry Anne Boleyn. The Infanta
Juana's marriage to Archduke Philip of Hapsburg brought the Hapbsurg dynasty
to Spain. However, both marriages had tragic endings: Henry divorced
Catherine, and Juana went insane.
Upon Isabella's death at age fifty-four, her insane daughter Juana was
declared queen, with Philip of Hapsburg her consort. Ferdinand was forced to
give up the crown of Castile, but claimed regency in the name of his insane
daughter. With a mad queen on the throne, the Castilians were only too happy
to have Ferdinand back as their king upon the early death of Philip in 1506.
Remarried to the niece of his old enemy Louis XII, he ruled Spain until his
death in 1516. His daughter survived, locked up in a palace with the coffin
of her husband, for forty-seven years.
