Jeff,
QuickTime 4 is still "preview," or beta software -- so when using it, be
aware that there may be problems. In fact, a lot of people don't seem to
fully realize what beta software is: an unfinished product, which
inherently has bugs.
That being said, the QuickTime 4 beta is pretty stable and has only some
minor bugs. But it does have bugs. The one you're experiencing is one of
the known bugs. Some people have fixed it by reinstalling QuickTime 4.
I'm suspecting that you trashed the player and thought that removed
QuickTime from your system. QuickTime is actually much more than the
player. It provides a number of multimedia services to many applications.
To do this, it installs extensions in your system. You can remove them
manually or you can use the QuickTime installer to uninstall everything:
open it, select "custom" as your installation option, then choose
"uninstall" in the menu at the top of the next screen.
You'll want to download and install QuickTime 3 once you've uninstalled
QT4b.
Unless you're building a CD-ROM or other QuickTime-based media, you
probably won't gain anything from having QuickTime 4 at this point. As a
"multimedia" developer, I'd like nothing better than for everyone's
computer to have the latest version of QuickTime (or at least QT3). But
there's no reason to not at least wait until the final version of QT4 is
released. Given that the "preview cannot be saved" bug is well-documented
and proven, I can't imagine that Apple isn't fixing it as we speak.
