In reply to Brian Gaines questions re: negative marking and getting data into other formats. I'm not sure about the negative marking problem, but as far as getting data into spreadsheets and databases, you could use statistical analysis programs like SAS or SPSS which are usually available somewhere on a university campus and are used by sociologists, economists and other academic researchers. Versions are available for mainframes or PC's. It's fairly simple to get SPSS for the PC, for example, to read information from selected columns of text data and output that data to a database. Don't quote me on the syntax, but it would look somthing like: DATA LIST /FILE 'textfile.txt' /FIXED /NAME (A) 1-15 GRADE 35-36. TRANSLATE TO 'DATABASE.DB3'. This would read name from the first 15 columns as [DThis would read NAME from the first 15 columns and GRADE from columns 35 and 36 and save them to a database file with two fields- NAME and GRADE. Information in other columns would be ignored. I hope this is helpful. I realize it's been about a week since you posted, but I don't check mail often. Mike Hackett MHACKETT@DELPHI.COM
