Here is a schedule we used to use here at the University of Kentucky
Computing Center:

       +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
       |M|T|W|T|F|S|S|M|T|W|T|F|S|S|M|T|W|T|F|S|S|M|T|W|T|F|S|S|
8:00a +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
-9:00p |A|A|A|B|B|B|B|B|B|B|D|D|D|D|D|D|D|C|C|C|C|C|C|C|A|A|A|A|
       +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
8:00p |C|C|C|D|D|D|D|A|A|A|C|C|C|C|B|B|B|A|A|A|A|D|D|D|B|B|B|B|
-9:00a +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

Notes:
1) The work week runs Monday through Sunday and is only 36 hours total.
The operators were grouped into 4 teams.

2) This schedule involves rotating shifts, which could aid in
cross-training between shifts, and cycles every 4 weeks (very predictable).

3) When we started this schedule, there was little to do on Saturday
night. So, we split the weekend days -- day shift worked on Saturday
until 9:00pm and "night" shift worked on Sunday from 12:00 noon to 1:00am.
Later, when we started "operating" all night on Saturday and Sunday, each
team worked their respective shift -- one half of the team on Saturday,
the other half on Sunday).

4) Each team, when working days, would work 6 out of 7 days
(Thursday-Friday, Saturday or Sunday, and Monday-Wednesday).

5) Each team would have 7 days off when working nights (work
Monday-Wednesday, then off until Thursday of the following week, work
Thursday-Friday and either Saturday or Sunday).

6) With this schedule, each person would work no more than four 12-hour
days (two 30-minute meal breaks, which could not be combined).

7) We changed from this 12-hour shift schedule because some thought that
there was too much time away from the job (7 consecutive days every four
weeks).

8) When working 12-hour shifts 3 days (or nights) consecutively, most
people find there is time enough only for working, eating, and sleeping.
If an employee does anything else during that 3-day period, then they must
not be sleeping (probably) or eating (maybe).

9) This is a schedule you either love or hate. Those who dislike will
leave as soon as they get a chance. Those who like it you probably will be
unable to drive off.

10) Scheduling training may become more complex, as you either wait for
the employee(s) to rotate to day shift or risk their falling asleep
during the session(s).
