Where can you get a GM setup for studying radioactivity?
From many suppliers, such as Pasco; their phone number is (800)-772-8700.
According to my 1994 catalog a "student G-M Tube and Mount suitable for
alpha, beta and gamma detection" (model SN-8109) costs $176. That is all
you need if you can use an existing high voltage and counting units.
Otherwise it is less expensive to get the entire setup (model SF-9759A)
for $572; it comes with a book describing 63 nuclear science experiments.
You can also buy a set of absobres for $96 but students will learn more
if they are asked to make them themselves (wrapping Al paper is OK).
An alpha source (Po-210, 0.1 microcuries, T=138 days) costs $37.
I will be happy to assist anybody who needs help with simple radioactive
investigations; contact me by E-mail. GIVE YOUR KIDS A CHANCE TO ENJOY
LABORATORY WORK AND TO BE PART OF OUR DEBATE ABOUT THE NATURE OF
RADIOACTIVITY FROM COMPUTER MONITORS AND TV SCREENS.
