I am no expert, but I noticed that the some of the iron pipes under my lab
tables (gas lines) are magnetic. The students have problems with some
magnetic field labs bacause of it. At first I thought that it was because
someone in the past held my very strong magnet up to them. They the
janitor talked about electric arc welding of the pipes. I suspect this
may run current through the pipes and permanently aligh the domains.

This is just my theory. Did you get any other responses? I am curious
about this also.
