I've taught physics for 31 years and I've heard many a physics teacher say that s/he is really tough on the students the first month or so in order to weed out the students who don't belong. They are the same teachers who sincerely believe that, "Teaching would be a great job if it weren't for the students." I've always maintained that we physics teachers should be weeding kids into physics. Without the students, we wouldn't have this great job. No, no, no, it's not a job*, it's a career**.
