Microcontrolers in high school

I am looking at having a group of high school students work with these PIC
microcontrolers that have been written up in the electronics magazines over
the past year or so. They seem to be simple (33 instructions, RISC), fast
(20Mhz) and cheap. Does anyone have any experience in building projects and
programming such chips that they might want to share with me. Also I am in
need of ideas for projects using such chips.
Thanks. dabineri@tso.cin.ix.net
