you haven't read it before, please take a moment to do so.

This is a posting designed to orient new users to The PSYCGRAD
Project: The Psychology Graduate Student Internet Project. The
PSYCGRAD Project consists of the PSYCGRAD e-mail discussion list,
bit.listserv.psycgrad, The Digest, and the PSYCGRAD WWW site. This
message is posted twice monthly.

If you have *any* questions, problems, comments, etc... about the
PSYCGRAD project, please e-mail the PSYCGRAD Director, Jason
Washburn, at: jwashbur@wppost.depaul.edu

Thank you.

                             MISSION STATEMENT

                    Welcome to The PSYCGRAD Project:
The Psychology Graduate Student Internet Project

The PSYCGRAD Project is a list designed as a form of networking for
graduate students in the field of psychology. We encourage graduate
students to post here regularly and often. It is the intent of the list owner
and director that this list operate so to promote its use as the standard of
communication among graduate students in psychology. PSYCGRAD is
summarized daily through The PSYCGRAD Digest.

As such a means of professional graduate student networking, we encourage
many forms of communication. Announcements regarding job openings,
conferences, workshops, collective projects, etc. are extremely welcome.
Much communication will focus on ideas, discussions and debates regarding
graduate students experiences
(research, training, academic growth, faculty-student interaction, etc.).

PLEASE
We would like to sincerely request that you review the brief list of guidelines
below in order to ensure that we will be able to meet our objective. If you
find it necessary to suggest to someone that he or she increase the amount
of attention that is payed to one of these guidelines, please mail that
individual directly. Do not post to the list or the listdirector the
 suggestion.

1. Currently, when a new member subscribes to the list, the option is set
such that the daily digest is sent. However, unless you specifically want the
daily digest, we strongly recommend that you turn this option off, and
receive each individual item of mail as it is sent. The discussion tends to
become more alive and enjoyable this way.

If you wish to turn off the Digest format and receive each individual
message as it is sent, please send the following command:

                        SET PSYCGRAD NODIGEST

to: listserv@listserv.uottawa.ca

This command will let the listserv know that you prefer to receive your
mail in individual messages, rather than in the Digest format.

For those who prefer to stay with the Digest format, please pay special
attention to the following two guidelines:

1.1 Send individual mail and replies as often as you wish to
          PSYCGRAD at: psycgrad@listserv.uottawa.ca

1.2 Do not send the entire Digest back to PSYCGRAD.

2. Please take time to make sure that the subject line of your posting most
accurately reflects the messages content. Don't just hit your reply key
without attending to the subject line.
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE DIGEST TO LOOK RIGHT!
If you don't change the subject line in the Digest format, your subject line
will contain the date of all of the messages in the Digest, and not the
specific subject of the message. Remember, the Digest format is an
automatic default, and unless you have changed it, you will receive your mail
in the Digest format.

3. Please be sensitive to when your e-mail might best be privately made.

4. In keeping with the intention and mission of this list, please keep the
topics of discussion relevant and/or of interest to graduate students of
psychology. Acknowledging that all topics in existence could be said to be
"of interest to" some psychology graduate students, it should be understood
that the discussions here should be oriented towards issues more-directly
relevant to graduate students in psychology than any topic under the sun.

5. Please, rather than respond to each letter on a given topic, read all of the
letters on the topic first, then compose your answers and send them in one
letter.

6. Please do not flame (intentionally insult; publicly attack subscribers of a
given electronic network through the content of your postings or e-mail).
Try to provide rational behind your points when you disagree.
"It's okay to disagree with someone or their ideas. It is not okay to insult
them." -Betty Harris

7. Please keep in mind and respect that PSYCGRAD is not a general
psychology discussion list. Therefore, it is requested that you respect that
psychology graduate students have a right to have a network where they are
assured that they are only communicating with students studying psychology
topics at the graduate level.

We recognize that meaningful and useful contributions could be made by all
graduate students, irrespective of their field of study, but this is not the
purpose of The PSYCGRAD Project. Please respect this.
This has nothing to do with APA, CPA, APS, EPA, MPA, WPA, or any
other "P"-related association or society. Please note that there is a need for
a list to be created for all graduate students. This is not that list.

The American Education Research Association (AERA) runs a Graduate
Studies List called AERA-GSL. This list is designed for use by graduate
students of all disciplines. Subscribe to the list by sending the command
"Subscribe AERA-GSL Your Name" to: listserv@asu.edu. The National
Association of Graduate and Professional Students (NAGPS) also has several
discussion lists that may be of interest to graduate students in general. For
more information, point your web browser to: http://www.nagps.org/NAGPS/

If you are not a psychology graduate student, feel free to listen in, but please
DO NOT send any postings to The PSYCGRAD Project.
It defeats our purpose. If you are studying in such a manner that you
honestly see yourself as an exception, and you consider your topic of study
as a psychology topic, then please continue to post in your usual manner
and make no fuss about it. We've already debated this topic into the ground.

Announcements designed to benefit the members of our group
(eg. employment, conference announcements) are, of course, extremely
welcome.

People wishing to contribute to a more general discussion of psychology,
undergraduate education in psychology, or interested in faculty issues in
psychology are encouraged to visit the links to psychology-related
discussion list at the PSYCGRAD Project Web site. You can reach the links
by pointing your Web browser to:
                     http://aix1.uottawa.ca/~simpson/lists.html

7.1 Commercial solicitation is prohibited on The PSYCGRAD Project.
However, it has occurred. Herein, announcements which are
designed to increase monetary rewards are considered
      "commercial solicitations." Though strongly prohibited,
should they occur, the sender will be billed a fee for
advertising at a rate of $19.95 per PSYCGRAD subscriber
(latest estimates yield a figure of $3990.00). Failure
to pay within one month will result in a transfer of
charges to the Internet access provider through which the
sender was able to post the advertisement to PSYCGRAD.
Any and all funds accrued via this billing will be dedicated
to the not-for-profit development of The PSYCGRAD Project.
Advertisements shall not exceed one per month, necessary
      action pending.

8. Pregraduate students wishing information about graduate school should
reference the APA publication "Graduate Studies in
Psychology." Please refrain from posting general queries of the nature, "I
would like information on graduate program which . . ." or "I am a
pregraduate student in psychology and . . ." However, please feel welcome to
listen in. If necessary, mail to individuals in the program to which you need
specific information after referencing the APA manual mentioned above.

Undergraduate psychology students *are* invited to field their questions on
special email discussion groups designed especially for this population. The
following lists are available for undergraduate psychology students:
       - PSYCH-L: send command "sub PSYCH-L your name" to
         listserv@listserv.uoguelph.ca)
       - Undergrad PsychList (send command "subscribe" to
         UG-Psychlist-Request@psy.uq.oz.au)

9. If you are not currently interested in the topics being addressed on
PSYCGRAD, **PLEASE** feel free to introduce a new topic. Send out a
query. Speak your mind. Debate an issue. The content of this list is up to
you. If you cannot find what you are looking for in The PSYCGRAD
Project, it's because you haven't written about it yet.

Thank you for your time and interest in PSYCGRAD.
