Since when has slashing costs become a superficial act of performacne
for an executive?

Cutting costs continually is a key component of successful strategy.
Doing more with less is the essence of being human--in case you
missed it.  People as well as firms had better learn this, love it,
and live it if they want ot succeed in a competitive environment.
