On Richard's question about adventure learning:
2 years ago we `left the classroom' with our team training and went to
the ropes course. This spring, we added paint ball. We have a rural
course on a 700 acre reservation, with sleeping and eating
accomodations for groups of up to 70.
The course consists of about 20 low course elements, a 60 ft repelling
tower, and 3 high courses - with a 600' zip line. The course is being
expanded as we `speak'.
A combination of experiential exercises, adventure learning and
outdoor challenge is an unbeatable combination to build teams! We
also do an pre- and post- ground school - to ensure maximum transfer
to the work place. I can't quote you statistics, but the difference
(anecdotal) between pre and post team perceptions is very high.
We recently had 30 general managers from a national restaurant chain
fly in for the course - they told us they would be back with their
individual teams this fall (pretty strong recommendation).
I am going to SC next week to a week long ropes course certification
course to raise our `credentials' on the course.
Lot of background info, but wanted ya to know that I'm not just
blowing smoke...
Specifically:
I am now convinced that there is no better vehicle for team training,
including and perhaps especially SDWT's. We employ a `challenge by
choice' process, not forcing anyone to do anything for which they feel
uncomfortable. This is not a mountain-climbing, week long, eat
berries type of course - so comparatively speaking - the risks are
minimal. See following table:
INJURIES PER MILLION PARTICIPANT HOURS
Nonactivity time............... 0.15
