*********************************************************************** * RADIO-L : a discussion of Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) * *---------------------------------------------------------------------* * send discussion/contributions to: RADIO-L@tc.umn.edu (Internet) * *********************************************************************** Date: 02 October 1998 From: mss@orangenet.co.uk Subject: Re: The Manufacturer's point of view For James Janzen's information (and interested others).... The European Broadcasting Union (together with European and Japanese Electronics manufacturers) is currently developing TPEG (Transport Protocol Experts Group). TPEG is a bearer independent (hence can be used equally successfully on DAB, DVB, GSM, Internet, RDS etc.) protocol that can be can used to deliver information from one or more information providers, to many receivers. The defining of the protocol is almost complete together with the first of many applications - which happens to be for Road Transport messages. Once this is complete (by the end of 1998) we'll move on to develop other applications, which could include Public Transport, Meteorological information, Air Travel applications etc. One particular nice thing - it has been developed to be used without proprietary databases etc. which so often prevent widespread adoption because of commercial interests. More info is available on the EBU web site http://www.ebu.ch Mark Saunders *********************************************************************** * Check out RADIO-L and other DAB resources on the World Wide Web * * http://www.magi.com/~moted/dr * ***********************************************************************
