*********************************************************************** * RADIO-L : a discussion of Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) * *---------------------------------------------------------------------* * send discussion/contributions to: RADIO-L@tc.umn.edu (Internet) * *********************************************************************** Date: 24 February 1999 From: Simon_Mackay@BIGPOND.COM Subject: Re: DAB for now is mainly a media for the car Radio is mainly listened to on the car radios as stated before, but also on portable sets, clock radios and the like. We have to wait until the manufacturers get their act together and develop portable sets to facilitate this area of listening. As for enhanced radio, using data to enhance a radio program can be of benefit to the end-users. For example, my clock radio woke me to the 7am news bulletin and there was a story about heroin overdosing. They made verbal references to organisations's names and contact numbers both after the story and when the bulletin ended. What could happen would be a DAB receiver would have an information button that pops up the name and phone number of the organisation and this information could be copied into a temporary memory in the set, accessible at all times. With RDI, it could also mean that the information could be copied to a computer and printed out or one could "vector to" the organisation's Web page. The datacasting aspect would work mainly for people who desire the DAB system to be a bearer for data, rather than a bearer for audio.
