Thought I should mention for the benefit of people in the
Chicago area that the Du Sable Museum on the south side (55th
and Cottage Grove, about a mile from the U. of Chicago) has a
major exhibit on the work and life of Paul Robeson. It will be
up for a couple more weeks. I don't think there are film clips, but
songs, theater recording, letters, cue cards, a photo of the London
theater showing SONG OF FREEDOM...

Can anyone direct me to a location on the web that gives financial
information on films. What did they cost - how much did they take in.
Preferable with some detail in each area: eg pre production, production,
post production - maybe even cast salaries; sales by country, video,
cable, etc. I understand that these numbers will be inaccurate. If not
on the web - is there a source off the web? Thanks in advance.

The information may from an earlier era than the poster had
in mind, but the April 1997 issue of the Silent Film Bookshelf
http://www.cinemaweb.com/silentfilm/bookshelf/
reprints several contemporary articles on costs and grosses
of silent and early sound films.

A 1927 article from Photoplay examined the profitability of the
average program picture and the most successful roadshow
pictures. After sound films were established, in 1932 Variety
compared the most successful sound films to the most successful
silents. The issue also includes two views of the commercial
success of D.W. Griffith- a Griffith press release and a Variety
article.

On-line (but off-hand) I'd suggest the Internet Movie Database
(www.imdb.com) for B.O. numbers broken down by country. They've only
recently started doing this in detail (i.e. since about the beginning of
1997), however. As for more detailed financial information, your best bet
is still the trades, especially Variety (the print edition; the web site is
fairly limited). Keep in mind that more detailed information like cast
salaries and non-theatrical revenues will be more difficult to track down.

Any other more useful sources out there, particularly on the Net?

Hollywood Reporter has archives with financial material, eg: Box
Office grosses, and such like, I believe - but only available to those
who pay a subscription.
