side by side tables with :table. tag ( how ? )

Hi, I am trying to put 2 small tables side by side. I went into 2
column mode, did the tables, exited 2 column mode. If instead
of the tables I put regular text everything works fine, but
the tables come out in the left column. I presume that there
is some incompatibility, but is there another way ?
The tables fit in the defined columns (I checked that: 2.4i for table
2.9i for columns). How can I center a table ? there is no align !
