Hi JCMaia, I tried (using IBM GML) the following:

:gdoc.
:col2.
* ---------------------------------------------------------------
:rdef id=rowx1 cwidths='*  *  *  *  '
               align  ='c  c  c  c  '.
:table column refid=rowx1 id=tabx1.
:thd.
:c.text1:c.text2:c.text3:c.text4
:ethd.
:row refid=rowx1
:c.item11:c.item12:c.item13:c.item14
:c.item21:c.item22:c.item23:c.item24
:c.item31:c.item32:c.item33:c.item34
:tcap.Tables Side by Side (1)
:etable.
* ---------------------------------------------------------------
cb
:rdef id=rowx2 cwidths='*  *  *    '
               align  ='c  c  c    '.
:table column refid=rowx2 id=tabx2.
:thd.
:c.text1:c.text2:c.text3
:ethd.
:row refid=rowx2
:c.item11:c.item12:c.item13
:c.item21:c.item22:c.item23
:c.item31:c.item32:c.item33
:tcap.Tables Side by Side (2)
:etable.
:col1.
:egdoc.

This worked perfectly on our system. Referring to your difficulties,
it may be that you omitted the keyword "column" on the :table-tag.
NB, the ".cb"-SCRIPT command was inserted only to ensure, that
a new column is started after the first table. The tags
":col1." and ":col2." are small installation dependent GML tags
switching between one and two-column layout.

Hope this helps | Klaus
