I'm so glad I found this newsgroup. I thought I was the last Waterloo
Script fanatic left in North America. I was the Script guru at Computer
Associates for about 12 years, and I know the program inside-out.

In answer to your question, there is indeed a program called Watcom GML.
I beta-tested it about 3 years ago. It is far more than just a GML
parser. The release I tested was the first to include control ("dot")
commands and macro capabilities. You could also define GML tags beyond
the starter set. Watcom's stated aim was to make the program as close as
possible to mainframe Script. They mostly succeeded, with the notable
exception of an alternative method of font definition support.

So much for the good news.

I last spoke to David McKee, the Watcom GML developer, about a month ago.
He said that marketing killed the product, supposedly for lack of
interest. This happened before the Powersoft/Sybase takeover. Meanwhile,
they own the product but won't distribute it. I could send you a copy of
the installation diskette, but I don't know about copyright and beta
non-disclosure issues in this case.

By the way, VM & MVS Waterloo Script continues to be supported by Bruce
Uttley at the Department of Computing Services at the University of
Waterloo, NOT Watcom. This is confusing, since Watcom is the program's
distributer.

It would interesting to hear from fellow Scriptographers. I was recently
a casualty of CA's corporate scorched earth policies. I don't suppose
there are many jobs for Script gurus these days, but if you hear of any,
please let me know. I'm very experienced in many areas of electronic
publishing -- text composition, font design, AFP/Xerox/PCL printing, etc.
I started as a technical writer (M.S. from RPI) so I can write in addition
to code macros and use VM internals.

Anyway, if I can be of further assistance, please call me at (407)
299-4873 or contact me via email.
