There are three books in English that I would recommend. Some others exist in Swedish, I believe. SIMULA BEGIN, Birtwistle, Dahl, Myrhaug and Nygaard, pub. Chartwell Bratt/Studentlitteratur. This is the classic SIMULA book, but some beginners find it hard to get into. It is very strong on programming as modelling, which is the origin of the object oriented philosophy. The book is really good once you have grasped the basics of the language. It was written at a time when it could be assumed that many people would know the Algol 60 core of SIMULA. Object Oriented Programming with SIMULA, Kirkerud, Addison Wesley. This is a very careful introduction to about two thirds of SIMULA (or some similar fraction). It covers up to classes, but does not really spend much time on object oriented uses of the language. It is very weak on co-routines and the built in classes for simulation. A better title would probably be "imperative programming with SIMULA". What it covers is very easy to follow. An Introduction to Programming with SIMULA, Pooley, pub. Blackwell Scientific. This covers the whole (nearly) of the language from a beginner's perspective. Unfortunately there are one or two mistakes, but a corrected version of the material affected is available from the author (i.e. me). It does cover co-routines and the full story on inheritance, as well as the built in classes SIMSET and SIMULATION. All the above opinions are my own and I am happy to debate them. -- Rob Pooley Department of Computer Science Edinburgh University Kings Buildings Mayfield Edinburgh EH9 3JZ Scotland Tel. +44 31 650 5123 Fax. +44 31 667 7209
