Invitation to the 18th SIMULA Users Conference
(the Silver Anniversary of SIMULA 67)
June 11-12, 1992
Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands

'Modelling and Optimization of Complex Systems'

Introduction:
=============

The SIMULA Users Conference will be held in the Netherlands this year.
It is number 18 in a series of conferences which have followed the development
and applications of the SIMULA language.
It will also be the first conference for the new Association of SIMULA Users.
The emphasis has been shifted from a particular language (i.e. Simula) to the
broader concern of computer modelling of complex systems, together with the
software and hardware that are used to this end.

The central theme of the conference is:
             'Modelling and Optimization of Complex Systems' *)

Computer models of complex systems can form an excellent basis for system
control as well as a basis for computer aided design of new systems.

Keynote speaker:
================

Prof. O.J. Dahl (University of Oslo) will be the keynote speaker.
Ole-Johan Dahl is professor of computing science since 1968 at the University of
Oslo. His current main interests are: program specification, program development
and program verification. He worked with basic software including high level
language design and implementation since 1955. He became deeply involved in the
birth of SIMULA I in 1962, which he developed together with Prof. Kristen
Nygaard ( both working at that time at the Norwegian Computing Centre ). They
subsequently developed SIMULA 67 during the following six years.
Since 1968 O.J. Dahl has been engaged in teaching computer science, structured
programming and program specification. He has developed together with O. Owe
the language ABEL, especially used for specification and programming.

Presented papers:
==================

A. Derviz (Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Prague): "Manufacturing Company
Investment Policies on Three Levels of SIMULA Data Structures"

G. Fairhurst (King's College, Aberdeen):
"Implementation of Software for an Adaptive System to Measure and
Counter Noise on a 20/30 GHz Packet Satellite Link"

R. Hills (University of Exeter): "A Reconfigurable Maintenance, Monitoring &
Management System in Modular Form"

J.R. Holmevik (University of Trondheim, Norway):
"Historical Perspectives on the SIMULA Development"

H. Islo (Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden):
"Structuring and Modelling the Socio-Psychological Work Environment"

E. Kindler (Charles University, Prague): "Tutorial on Simula's Quasi-Parallel
Systems and their Application"

B. Magnusson (Institute of Technology, Lund, Sweden):
"A Module Concept for Object Oriented Languages"

R. Thyselius (S & T Datakonsulter AB, Taeby, Sweden):
"Adam, an Ada Simulation Library"

H.G. Sol (Technical University of Delft; the first chairman of the
ASU!): "Dynamics in Information Systems"

J. Weinberger (Computer and programming consultancy, Prague):
"Simulation Support for Project Design and Project Management"

Silver Anniversary:
===================

This conference will also commemorate the 25th anniversary of the first SIMULA
standard, SIMULA 67, and it marks the thirty years since Kristen Nygaard
presented the first paper on the SIMULA concept. This Silver Anniversary gives
cause to reflect on this truly remarkable development. It was the forerunner to
the object oriented programming style, and is today in the forefront of object
oriented programming languages. The current standard is SIMULA 89 and further
developments are under way.

In commemoration of SIMULA's 25th anniversary, the programme committee has
welcomed some papers that deal with the historical development of this
programming methodology and its technical, social and historical context.

Location:
=========

The conference will be held at the "Leeuwenhorst Congress Centre",
Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands.
It is situated 25 km. from Schiphol Airport, 25 km. from The Hague, 35 km.
from Amsterdam, close to the woods, the dunes and the North Sea.
The Leeuwenhorst Congress Centre is well known. It has well equipped and has
pleasant lecture rooms. It has comfortable hotel rooms, restaurants, bars and
