Subject: Metro Skywarn Homepage Grows!
X-Mailer: Bdale's Mailer version PA3AZK.940710 (MSDOS)
The Metro Skywarn Homepage has grown considerably over the last couple
months. Its mission has evolved a bit and the content has ballooned.
There are now seventy-one pages with emphasis on spotter training and
basic weather forecast information and education links. The homepage is
designed to appeal to everyone from someone interested in getting
involved in severe weather spotting to the grizzled Skywarn leader with
a hail dented car.
If you are new to weather spotting there are links to basic spotter
training material on the Web and a comprehensive education resource page
dedicated to expanding your weather knowledge. There you can find links
to learn the basics about tornadoes, thunderstorms, weather safety as
well as get an introduction to weather forecasting and satellite image
and radar interpretation. Then read up on the latest reports from the
VORTEX project and other recent research. While your at it, test your
knowledge by taking a quiz on everything from weather trivia and myths
to radar interpretation.
There are detailed descriptions of nine Skywarn programs including both
urban and rural settings. There are links to twelve other Skywarn
Homepages with varying degrees of content and a telnet BBS. There is a
page with email contacts with thirty Skywarn Programs around the US.
Thanks to the Skywarn and Ham-wx mail lists and other information passed
along by several contributors, I've added several pages describing new
technology being added to Skywarn programs around the country. Want to
know what WRSAME, AFOS, WWIN, or APRS is? Want to know the latest on how
packet and pagers are being used for Skywarn applications? Stop by and
browse!
There is a growing page full of weather-related links and a page
dedicated to the burgeoning number of NOAA and NWS Web Pages. Many of
these links are developing quickly as educational resources with
extensive content. The NWSFO pages in particular seem dedicated to
outdoing their peers with creative education.
I'll be constant updating and adding new information as it comes in.
I've been collecting ham-related links for those so inclined and will
add a page when the weather-related stuff coming in slows down. I'd like
to add information from Skywarn programs who think they have a
particularly good idea that has worked well as well as lots more Skywarn
program descriptions.
If you know of good weather education resources on the Net, pass them
along. I'd also like to add a page dedicated to introducing NEXRAD radar
with links to gifs of radar images of classic storm patterns. Anyone
know of a good resource?
If you belong to a Skywarn Program, stop by and fill out the forms based
questionaire. Or if your browser can't handle forms, just email me the
answers with provide links. If you are just interesting in severe
weather or Skywarn, stop by and learn how to get involved.
Thanks to all who have contributed. Keep the information, links and ideas
coming!
