Forums like this one are valuable for all SKYWARN operations. It is agreed that simply sitting in front of a series of slides or even a video tape of severe weather DOES NOT constitute learning but instead just plain viewing. I have a problem with a local group of private citizens or "wannabes" that advertise their search and rescue service as "well trained" and all they do is "view" news videos or home made video tapes and they claim their "well trained for all emergencies". I always urge all of our SKYWARN spotters to attend as many training sessions as they can. In our Spotter Registration Program, the NWS does give a short quiz on the topics discussed during the training session. They review the quiz and provide explanations on each question. After this session the spotters complete a questionnaire and then will receive a Spotter Registration Card. This card has a number that is only used for database purposes. We DO NOT pass id numbers on our nets. We currently have approx. 800 amateur radio spotters listed in the central Indiana area. Thanks and 73's Mark Shaffer N9GDR E.C. for Indiana SKYWARN Amateur Radio Operations
