I live in Greeneville, TN, a city of about 15,000, which is located about
75 miles NE of Knoxville. I feel that the use of outdoor sirens to warn
the public is very necessary because many people simply don't watch
television and listen to the radio (especially those that regularly carry
severe weather warnings). However, the purpose of the siren must be
clear to the public. I know last May, when we had a tornado warning in
effect, nobody knew about it except me and everyone I managed to call. :)
The only television stations that carry updated information concerning
warnings are in Knoxville, and only one station there includes our county
in their warning area. Our local radio stations didn't pick up the
warning for about 45 minutes. Luckily the warning was at night when
school was not in session, because we have had tornado watches in effect
and the administration of my high school didn't know about it until a
teacher listening to the radio accidentally heard it.
I guess my point is that at this time the siren still can be used as
a valuable tool to prevent loss of life when severe weather threatens. I
hope that the new Emergency Alert System that is beginning to be used
across the country will help increase warning distribution as well. Is
there any information on the Internet about the Emergency Alert System
and how it is going to be utilized?
Thanks for the bandwidth :)
