Outdoor Sirens

Here in Florida they dismantled the outdoor siren system circa 1975...

Since that time I can recall at least 3 times when the sirens would have
saved lives and prevented injury...they are...

Hurricane Elena....predicted to strike the panhandle of Florida in
1985....took a sudden right turn at 11 pm at night...we went from "Small
Craft Should Exercise Caution" to "Hrricane Warning in Effect" in all of
five minutes.

The Tornado Outbreak of 1992....Saturday morning at 11 am...most people
in the effected area said they had no clue the weather would be severe.

The Spring Storm of 1993...coastal flood tides of 5 to 6 feet above
normal...many people said they woke up to find the Gulf of Mexico lapping
at their bedposts at 4 a.m...again the NWS took the blame for no warning
and yet...

All of the above events were toned out on the NWS WX radio and via the
normal media outlets....the EBS system was activated for Elena...

I don't know about you, but I don't leave my TV or radio on while I sleep
and I only listen to it sometimes in the car....

Sirens may not be hi-tech but they do the one thing no other system
does....they interrupt you, they wake you up, they tell you to turn the
darn TV or radio on and find out what is out there that can kill you.

Just my two cents worth.
