This is a interesting problem and one that has to be solved. I live in
Toledo, IA. The way the county, Tama County, handles the sirens, from
my view, I am only a spotter for local television stations. The towns
are the ones who decide if to blow the sirens or not. Most of the time
the only time the sirens are blown is if a funnel/tornado is spot by one
of the fire dept. spotter. I also think that if the situation is bad
enough the fire dept, may blow the siren. Now a recent storm in May
there was a tornado warning issued for the county to the west of us.
The county is home to a rather large city about 20000 people more or
less. The sirens blew in the town and local police officers were
confused when people went on with there lifes like normal. On police
officer was also asked what does the siren mean. Now many times the
local television stations stress to go to the basement, etc. But what
happens when the sirens are stuck by lightning and go off or when there
is no power. There are flaws in the system and I feel that a united
effort is needed to solve the problem and make the public aware of what
is going on. I think it is a good idea for a group of people from every
state to get a program going and get on the problem.
