This was one hell of a storm. We had 2 - 3 ft. diameter trees snapped
or uprooted from the ground all over Kenosha, Racine, and Walworth
counties in southeast Wisconsin. I think there also was some damage in
northern Illinois, just south of the state line. There were winds
clocked at over 100 m.p.h., and debris flying horizontally thru the air.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MILWAUKEE/SULLIVAN WI

...PRELIMINARY SURVEY OF STORM DAMAGE INDICATES SEVERE STRAIGHT
LINE WINDS...

A PRELIMINARY SURVEY BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OF THE STORM
DAMAGE ACROSS WALWORTH...RACINE AND KENOSHA COUNTIES IN SOUTHEAST
WISCONSIN POINTS TO SEVERE STRAIGHT LINE WINDS AS THE CAUSE FOR THE
WIDESPREAD DAMAGE ACROSS THESE COUNTIES EARLIER THIS AFTERNOON.
THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE PATH STRETCHES FROM ELKHORN IN WALWORTH
COUNTY...DUE EAST THROUGH BURLINGTON TO ALONG THE RACINE AND
KENOSHA COUNTY LINE.

AT THE CORE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE PATTERN...TREES AND
POWERLINES WERE TAKEN DOWN AND SOME STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO BUILDINGS
WAS OBSERVED. TRACTOR TRAILER RIGS WERE BLOWN OVER ON I-94 NEAR THE
RACINE/KENOSHA LINE.

AT THIS TIME...IT APPEARS THE DAMAGE WAS THE RESULT OF A
MICROBURST...A CONCENTRATED AREA OF VERY HIGH WINDS THAT IN THIS
CASE MAY HAVE EXCEEDED 100 MPH. ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT LIKELY A TORNADO
PLAYED A FACTOR...WINDS THIS STRONG ARE EQUIVALENT TO A TORNADO OF
F1 TO POSSIBLY F2 MAGNITUDE.

AN INTERESTING NOTE...THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CLUE TO THE LIKELIHOOD
OF A MICROBURST VERSUS A TORNADO WAS SEEN IN THE MATURE CORN FIELDS
ACROSS THE AREA. THE CORN WAS OBSERVED TO BE LYING DOWN IN A DUE
EAST ORIENTATION. OTHER AGRICULTURAL AND STRUCTURAL DEBRIS WAS
BLOWN TO THE EAST AS WELL. TORNADO DAMAGE WOULD LIKELY SHOW MORE
TWISTING AND SCATTERING OF DEBRIS.

THIS IS A PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF THE DAMAGE FROM THE NATIONAL
WEATHER SERVICE.
