I'm not a Ham but I have to respond to this. Being a HAM means nothing when
it comes to spotting. Many HAM's (and you all are ham's :-) ) are fantastic
spotters, others are not. Many without radios are great spotters..many
are not. Anyone that can find a connection b/t operating a radio and
knowledge of meteorology can e-mail me personally. I'd love to know your
scientific findings on this.
Now, any spotter that has a radio, whether it's a policemen, fireman,
HAM operator, etc, etc has a distinct advantage in relaying that information.
It's true that some HAM'S do relay information w/o having much background in
weather..but so do the general public via the telephone. The majority
of HAM's that I know take weather spotting very seriously and I commend them
on all their volunteer work..actually...I flat out applaud them. No one
makes them come to the training sessions, talk on this forumn, read and
learn material from books and/or the 'net, but they do it and I can't imagine
finding fault in that. Are HAM's (who are not meteorologists) as good as
spotters as most chasers? No, of course not (generally speaking, of course).
But does mean that the information provided by them is not valuable? I'd
much rather have 2000 HAM'S giving info..even if some of it might be bad
rather than having no information what-so-ever.
