Subject: Domestic NTDB

Folks:

I recently phoned the user support number distributed with the NTDB
CD-ROM (National Trade Data Bank). The person answering my questions
was both helpful and knowledgeable.

My reason for posting this, however, is not specifically to praise the
assistance I received, but rather to pass on some information I received
regarding a new CD product Commerce is developing. The product would be
a sister disc to NTDB (same software), but providing domestic economic
/ statistical information (such as the Economic Report of the President).

It would definately be helpful if librarians and users who think NTDB is
valuable would let the appropriate members of Congress know of that value,
and that a domestic equivalent to NTDB is needed. Both the authorizing
and appropriating committees should be contacted. Any of you interested
in pushing this new product living in one of the districts (Reps) or states
(Senators) listed below is encouraged to write supporting the CD.

House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, State, the
Judiciary and Related Agencies

Chair: Rep. Neal Smith (D-IA)

Members:

Bill Alexander (D-AR)
Joseph Early (D-MA)
Bob Carr (D-MI)
Alan Mollohan (D-WV)
Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)
Jamie Whitten (D-MS) [Chair Full Committee]
Harold Rogers (R-KY)
Ralph Regula (R-OH)
Jim Kolbe (R-AZ)

House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology

Chair: Rep. George Brown (D-CA)

Two subcommittees this Committee should be contacted:

1) Subcommittee on Science (Rep. Rich Bower (D-VA) Chair)
2) Subcommittee on Technology and Competitiveness (Rep. Tim Valentine (D-NC))

Senate Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, State and Judiciary

Chair: Sen. Ernest Hollings (D-SC)

Members:

Daniel Inouye (D-HI)
Dale Bumpers (D-AR)
Frank Lutenberg (D-NJ)
Jim Sasser (D-WA)
Brock Adams (D-WA)
Warren Rudman (R-NH)
Ted Stevens (R-AK)
Mark Hatfield (R-OR)
Robert Kasten (R-WI)
Phil Gramm (R-TX)

Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation

Chair: Ernest Hollings (D-SC)

Subcommittee on Science, Technology and Space

Chair: Sen Albert Gore, Jr. (D-TN)

        Members:

        Jay Rockefeller (D-WV)
        Lloyd Bentsen (D-TX)
        John Kerry (D-MA)
        Richard Bryan (D-NV)
        Charles Robb (D-VA)
        Larry Pressler (R-SD)
        Ted Stevens (R-AK)
        Robert Kasten (R-WI)
        Trent Lott (R-MS)

My own impression and opinion is that NTDB is the most successful CD product
distributed through the Depository Library Program. Let's encourage Congress
to keep up the good work.
