DATA TAPE AVAILABLE FOR 1987-88 SCHOOLS AND
STAFFING SURVEY PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOL TEACHER
                         QUESTIONNAIRES

The data tape for the combined Public and Private School Teacher
Questionnaire components of the Schools and Staffing Survey
(SASS) is available from the National Center for Education
Statistics (NCES). The SASS is an integrated set of surveys of
public and private schools, school districts, school principals,
and teachers. The data tape for the Public and Private School
Teacher Questionnaires contains survey responses for a national
sample of 40,593 responding public school teachers and 6,764
responding private school teachers. The survey provides data
about teacher demographic characteristics, teacher preparation
and qualifications, current assignment field and certification
fields, career history and plans, income sources including
income-in-kind and moonlighting, working conditions, and
perceptions of school environment and the teaching profession.

The weighted response rates of 86 percent for public and 79
percent for private school teachers were achieved from original
sample sizes of 56,242 public school teachers and 11,529 private
school teachers. The data have been edited, but imputation for
missing data has not been performed. Estimates are possible at
the national and regional levels (using the Northeast, Midwest,
South, and West census regions) for both public and private
school teachers, and at the state level for public school
teachers only. Replicate weights are available on the file for
variance estimation. Items involving age and salary have been
converted to categories to prevent disclosure of the identity of
individual public or private school teachers.

A subsample of teachers was selected for the Teacher Followup
Survey (TFS), collected one year after SASS. The teachers in the
followup survey were chosen to represent continuing teachers or
those who have left either the school or the profession. Data for
the 1988-89 Teacher Followup Survey are released separately from
data tapes for SASS.

Previous releases of SASS data include:

o 1987-88 Public School Teacher Demand and Shortage
     Questionnaire
o 1987-88 Public School Questionnaire
o 1987-88 Public School Administrator Questionnaire
o 1987-88 Public School Teacher Questionnaire
o 1987-88 Private School Teacher Questionnaire
o 1987-88 Private School Questionnaire
o 1987-88 Private School Administrator Questionnaire
o 1987-88 Private School Teacher Demand and Shortage
     Questionnaire

The combined Public and Private School Teacher dataset is
available for $175; each additional dataset is $75. All four
datasets (Teacher Demand and Shortage, Administrator, School, or
Teacher) may be purchased for $400. Each of the four datasets
contains both public and private sector data for that component.
