SEMINARS

Sunday, October 31, 1993 Sheraton City Centre
1:30 - 5:00 PM

Applications Using the 1990 Public Use Microdata
Samples on CD-ROM
Presenter: Deirdre Gaquin, Private Consultant
For the first time, the Census Bureau is making the PUMS files available
on CD-ROM media. This seminar is divided into two sections: first,
a presentation on the structure and content of PUMS will be provided;
then, practical information on how best to extract, process and compile
data from CD-ROM PUMS will be discussed and illustrated. This seminar
is specifically geared toward users who do most of their census data
processing and compilation on microcomputers and wish to extend their
repertoire of applications to PUMS.

Using CD-ROM Media to Increase Productivity
Presenter: Ken Berkman, Bureau of Economic Analysis

Geared toward users who usually rely on mainframe tapes for
data acquisition and analysis, this seminiar will explore how
CD-ROM can be used to supplement and enhance productivity.
Case-by-case illustrations of how to make the best use of CD-ROM
based information systems will be given. The discussion will
include evaluating mainframe applications and identifying areas
where CD-ROM provides the most cost-effective and efficient media
for using economic, demographic, and social information. This seminar
will include a survey of available CD-ROM data in several areas,
including population and economic data, as well as other less well-known
substantive areas.
