continuous variables

I finished an MANOVA and a MANCOVA analysis for my master's thesis.
My data involved:

3 continuous dependent variables
2 continuous independent variables
1 discrete variable ( two levels )

A member of my reading committee has suggested that this is an
inappropriate analysis for this data, and that I should have done
three separate multiple regressions. Which I did over a year ago, and
got poor results. My DVs are moderating correlated so I decided a
to MANOVA instead. I need answers on two issues:

1) Is it " legitimate " to do an MANOVA with these variables ?
2) If it is, could you please cite me some references (studies/books).
If it is not, please give me specific reasons why.

Thank-you.
