This is in response to Greg Maislin's problem of assigning 300 subjects to 3 groups so that each block of 30 subjects is "balanced" (has 10 subjects in each group). I would do it like this: (1) Assign a block code to each consecutive block of 30 subjects. At the same time, assign a random number to each subject. (2) Sort the subjects by block code and random number. (3) Assign the first 10 subjects in a block to group A, the next 10 to group B, and the last 10 to group C. (4) Re-sort by ID code to get back the original ordering. Michael P. Cohen National Center for Education Statistics Washington, DC 20208-5654 Internet xic@cu.nih.gov
