In the beginning of July the following appeared in the Wall Street Journal.
I offer it in its entirety, without comment, except to say that I think
it adds some interesting perspective...

    MathSoft Inc.

    Statistical Sciences Acquired In Cash, Stock
    Transaction

      MathSoft Inc. said it acquired Statistical
    Sciences Inc., of Seattle, for about $3.5
    million cash and 348,000 MathSoft common shares.

      MathSoft, based in Cambridge, Mass., said it
    may pay as much as $1 million more in cash or
    stock, depending on Statistical Sciences'
    performance over a two-year period, and would
    take a charge against earnings in the fourth
    quarter as a result of the expected allocation of
    "a significant part of the purchase price to
    purchased research and development."
