First, let me *ENCOURAGE* you to investigate pipes for your need, although
if you want to use labeled tapes, you will need to look at the QSAM driver.
I am not certain the qsam driver gets much use, so outside help might be
limited. Pipeline's DEBLOCK filter has features for handling NETDATA format.

Having said that, here is a SHOWFILE commercial.

SHOWFILE is a very fine program that can be used to view SPOOL and/or CMS disk
files. It will decode NETDATA (DISK DUMP and CORNELL CARD also) files and
reconstruct the original records. It will also reconstruct the carriage
control chars for 'listing' SPOOL files.

When you look at its rather complete command set, you will tempted to think of
XEDIT. Most XEDIT things not related to changing the data are there,
very frequently using the same command names and syntax.

You can write SHOW macros, just like you can write XEDIT macros. This lets
you use SHOWFILE for many things other than viewing files.

No, SHOWFILE does not require that you have enough memory to load the entire
file. It will, however, use a lot of memory and keep large parts of the
file resident in memory if you have lots of memory available.

For your needs, I think that SHOWFILE would handle the input half of your
problem. It neither helps nor impedes you in the output side of your problem.

SHOWFILE is *WELL* worth having, even if you don't use it for this application.
