Ok, so I finally decided to make this stuff available to everyone. If you anon FTP to bobj.cc.uic.edu, there are four files you need to get: gopherd.rex gopherd rexx gophernn.fl gophernn filelist splitat.rex splitat rexx orlocate.rex orlocate rexx Gopherd rexx is the search engine. It has stuff in there to restrict IP address, or you can delete that and use the built-in Gopher IP checking. Either way, it should work. THis was done just to be done a few months ago. Thus, it's ugly code, but I think I commented well enough so that you could follow it. Please note: This software is still running on the VM Gopher server version 2.3! It shouldn't be too hard to make it work with 2.4, but I'm no help here. How it works: It's not as integrated as some Unix versions I've seen. You're presented with a menu of all the hierarchies, like bit, alt, etc... When you select the one you want, the server creates, on the fly, the list of all groups within that hierarchy. Once you select a group, if the selector string starts with a number, the group number, the GROUP file is read and the articles are displayed, similar to the ARTMENU in PSU NetNews. You then select an article, or document. If the file exists, it is sent back. If it doesn't, it assumes that it's an article, and extracts it from the proper VLIB. Hey, it works. One thing which you may notice in the code is that it only displays the newest 100 articles. This is because of the PCs around our campus, which just don't have enough memory to store a lot of articles, or even all the groups in a hierarchy, like the very large comp . If you run into any problems, let me know. I can't guarantee that I'll fix it, but I'll try to explain it. Also, please let me know if it works!
