Sorting by Line

A few days ago I asked the question why a regular document in which the body
is composed of lines terminated by SRt's does not sort correctly. I received
only one response to my enquiry from John Stratton of the University of Utah.

He states that the reason that the sort does not fully work is that WP defines
a line as one that is terminated by a HRt and the lines did terminate with a
HRt the sort would succeed.

I would venture to disagree with this claim. I believe a line is defined to
be one that terminates with either a SRt OR a HRt. I think the reason why the
sort fails (now that I've had a chance to think about it a little more) is that
the sort does indeed work with the SRt's but if the sorted line starts with
a word small enough to be included in the previously sorted line, it will be
"sucked back" making the current line appear not to be sorted correctly.

As pointed out in the original enquiry, if the document is converted to ASCII,
it will convert all the SRt's to HRt's and there is no problem.

Just thought that this might be of general interest to the list.

I missed the beginning of this so please excuse me if this has already
been mentioned.

You also have to be careful with codes at the beginnings of lines. I've
seen some horribly screwed-up Biliographies following ineptly invoked
sorts on lists which didn't have consistent formatting prior to the text
of an entry.
